Manuscripts

Papers should be written in English only.
Authors are requested to submit an original, single-sided, double-spaced, typed manuscript (including original figures) with two copies of both the complete text and the figures. Double spacing should be used not only in the main body of the text but also in the abstract, the table headings, the figure captions, footnotes, and list of references. Single-spaced manuscripts will be returned to the authors for retyping before reviewing. The manuscript must be organized in conformity with the manuscript requirements of the journal (see below). Manuscript pages must be numbered. Close agreement with these manuscript requirements considerably speeds up publication. In addition, authors should include any paper of theirs that is in press or under consideration elsewhere and includes information that would be helpful in evaluating the work submitted to Spectrochimica Acta, Part B.
Authors should never send a manuscript, either for first submittance or in revised form, by fax, unless this has been explicitly arranged with one of the Editors. Any kind of express or courier mail may be used, however. It may be advisable then to contact the relevant Editor by fax prior to mailing the manuscript.
A manuscript will be accepted after peer review (and revision) as an original Full Paper, a ``Views and Criticisms'' article, a (Tutorial) Review, or a ``Note'' (that is a Research Note, a Technical Note, an Analytical Note, a Note, a Communication, or a Letter to the Editor). Authors are free to submit a manuscript in any category, but the final decision as to the eventual classification lies with the Editors. ``Notes'' must be inherently concise.
Acronyms(i) The title of a paper should not contain acronyms: even acronyms such as ICP, AAS, TXRF, MS, etc. are not allowed. Titles ``lead an own life'', and may also appear beyond the community where the acronyms are common knowledge. Thus, use inductively coupled plasma, atomic absorption spectrometry, total-reflection X-ray fluorescence, mass spectrometry, etc. in the title.
(ii) The Abstract should not contain undefined acronyms, and acronyms should be defined here only if they are used more than once. Otherwise write the term in full.
(iii) Independently of whether an acronym has been defined in the Abstract, it should be defined at its first appearance in the manuscript, usually in the Introduction.
The general organization and lay-out of a manuscript should be in close conformity with the usage of Spectrochimica Acta, Part B. Therefore authors are earnestly requested to consider in addition to the Guide for Authors some recent issues of the journal prior to and during the preparation of their manuscripts. This saves considerable time in the editorial process and speeds up publication. The following rules must be observed, and the material should be presented in this order.
(i) Title of paper.
(ii) Name(s) of author(s).
(iii) Institute and address of author(s).
(iv) Abstract. The Abstract should be a concise and factual description of the contents and conclusions, and indicate any new findings. References, formulae and detailed analytical methodology should be avoided in the Abstract if at all possible.
The Abstract should summarize the principal objectives of the study, the essential results and the most interesting conclusion(s). The Abstract should not serve as an introduction. (Abstract should be a maximum of 500 words. It should be on a separate sheet of paper which includes the keywords.)
(v) Keywords. The author should supply up to five keywords (or short phrases). The Editors may change these or add to them.
(vi) Introduction. The Introduction should outline the objectives of the work and make clear why the study was undertaken. The Introduction should also refer to those publications that link the manuscript with previous work. The Introduction should start on a new page.
(vii) Description of the work. This description should, whenever possible, be arranged under headings such as Experimental, Instrumentation, Experiments, Apparatus and Techniques, Theoretical, Results and Discussion, Conclusions. These sections may be subdivided into subsections, and subsections, may be further divided. All sections must be provided with appropriate heads and must be numbered (with Arabic numerals).
Note 1.Do not publish detailed programs for computer calculations in hard copy form. However, computer programs and data complications may be published on disk in the scope of Spectrochimica Acta Electronica (SAE).

Note 2.The corresponding author should be identified on the title page of the manuscript (telephone, fax and e-mail numbers should be included where possible).

The Guide for Authors provides examples about the organization of manuscripts and includes detailed information about the lay-out of tables, and the preparation of figures and figure captions.

The Guide for Authors is regularly reprinted. Reprints can be obtained from the Editors.

Guide for the preparation of disks

Elsevier encourages authors to submit their articles to Spectrochimica Acta, Part B, on floppy disk.

Articles prepared using any of the most popular word-processing packages are acceptable, but please note the following points:

Please follow the general instructions for style and organization of a manuscript given above.
The disk should be formatted to be MS-DOS or Apple Macintosh compatible. Take care in the formatting of your disk (3.5'' preferred) and ensure that only the relevant files are on it.
Texts made with DisplayWrite, MultiMate, Microsoft Word, Samna Word, Sprint, Volkswriter, Wang PC, WordMARC, WordPerfect, Wordstar, or supplied in DCA/RFT, or DEC/DX format can be readily processed. In all other cases the preferred format is DOS text or ASCII. The names of the text files, the word-processing package and version used, together with the article title and authors' names, should be indicated on the disk.
Submit an original printout and two copies to one of the Editors (N.B. Do not send your disk until your article has been accepted in final form). When your article is accepted, send to the Editor the original disk that contains only the files exactly matching your final hard copy.
Proofs
A set of page proofs will be despatched directly from the typesetters to the first-named author, unless otherwise requested. Corrections at this stage should be restricted to the correction of typesetting errors. Other extensive alterations will be charged to the author or his institution.

An Offprint Order Form and Copyright Transfer Form will be included with the proof. Authors should complete the forms, and return them, with the corrected proof, within 48 hours of receipt, to SAB, Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd., Bay 15 K, Shannon Industrial Estate, Shannon, County Clare, Ireland; Fax: +353 61 472144. A list of corrections, the completed Offprint Order Form, and notification that the Copyright Transfer Form has been signed may be faxed to SAB at +353 61 472144. The signed Copyright Transfer Form must be returned to Shannon by (air)mail.

Copyright and permissions

Upon acceptance of an article by the journal, the authors will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to the Publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.

If excerpts from copyrighted works are included, the author must obtain written permission from the copyright holder, and must credit the source in the article.

Page charge and reprints

There is no page charge. Twenty-five reprints of each article will be provided free of charge to the principal author. Additional reprints can be ordered at prices shown on the off-print order form that accompanies the proofs.

Correspondence

All correspondence with the editors or Publisher should contain full reference to the paper concerned, i.e. the names of all the authors, the full title, the date of submission and the article nos. assigned by the Editor and Publisher (if known). Once the article has been accepted for publication all further correspondence should be sent to the Shannon office of Elsevier and not to the Editor (SAB, Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd., Bay 15 K, Shannon Industrial Estate, Shannon, County Clare, Ireland; Fax: +353 61 472144. Tel: +353 61 97194.
