Promote the CEPTU flagship role (cetaceans and sea turtles) to raise awareness among EU citizens on the shared Mediterranean Sea environment, common heritage of human culture and natural marine resources values. Supports the Biodiversity Strategy 2030 by contributing to the EU-wide network of offshore N2000 sites identification. Contributes to Marine Strategy Framework Directive, since it aims at setting a strategic approach to integrate assessment of D1 elements (CEPTU) and D10 (marine litter).

Description

In order to improve the conservation status of cetaceans and sea turtles (CEPTU species) in the Mediterranean, information will be obtained from these marine vertebrates in offshore waters to identify important sites for the conservation of these species. An international methodology for the surveillance and assessment of maritime traffic and floating marine litter impact will be established. The coherence of protection measures with the spatio-temporal needs of CEPTU species shall be assessed. The most suitable mechanisms to promote the conservation of CEPTU species shall be identified.
