I am a chemist and PhD in Theoretical Chemistry from Universidad de Valencia (Spain). I have collaborated in several projects about molecular spectroscopy, photophysics, photochemistry, photobiology and optoelectronics. I worked as a postdoc researcher at the Universidad de Barcelona (2009-2010) and I worked as a Marie Curie fellow at Imperial College London (2010-2012). Since 2015 I am an assistant professor at the Universidad Europea de Valencia. Together with my research activity I have been involved in many teaching duties.
Previous research interests were the quantum chemistry of drugs used in photochemotherapy, the electronic properties of DNA and RNA nucleobases, the electronic properties of molecules used in OLED devices, the reaction mechanisms of organic photochemical reactions and the photophysics of metal complexes used in LEC technology and other compounds used in solar cells My current research is focused on educational innovation, ICT tools, virtual labs, gamification, and e-learning.
Initially, I worked as a Ph.D. student (2004-2008) and research fellow (2008) in the QCEXVAL group (Quantum Chemistry of the Excited State) at the Molecular Science Institute of the University of Valencia (Spain). I was awarded with a FPU grant (Ministry of Education and Culture of Spain: 2004-2008). My PhD thesis (2009) was focused in quantum chemistry of biomolecules, specifically drugs which are used in photochemotherapy, under the supervision of Prof. Manuela Merchan and Dr. Luis Serrano-Andres, well-known experts in the field. I have used high-level quantum- chemical methods such as CASSCF and CASPT2 applied to the study of electronic properties for ground and excited states of biological systems. Regarding technical aspects, I acquired skills in the use of computational programs such as MOLCAS, GAUSSIAN and TURBOMOLE. In addition, during the PhD I was a guest at the Heinrich-Heine University (Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry) in Dusseldorf (March-June 2007) to learn how to compute SOC in molecules with DFT/MRCI and Turbomole, supervised by Prof. C. Marian and Dr. J. Tatchen. Later I was a post-doc researcher in University of Barcelona (Physical Chemistry Department/Molecular Materials Structure Group) for 6 months (November 2009-April 2010). There I studied systems which are interesting in OLED technology with TD-DFT, DFT/MRCI and CASPT2//CASSCF, supervised by Prof. J.J. Novoa.
As a postdoc I was awarded with a Marie Curie Grant (September 2010- September 2012) at Imperial College London (Department of Chemistry). I studied the role of conical intersection seams in photochemical systems (ethene+ethene, ethene+benzene) supervised by Prof. M.A. Robb and Dr. M.J. Bearpark. My work was focused on the analysis of the seam at second order and mapping of potential energy surfaces.
Next, I worked as a researcher at University of Valencia (Molecular Science Institute/Quantum Chemistry of Molecular Materials Group) in the field of optoelectronics, studying the photophysics of metal complexes used in LEC technology and other compounds used in solar cells.
Currently I am a teacher at the Universidad Europea de Valencia. My research interests are in the area of innovative teaching, virtual labs and gamification.
