  • May 16th, 2022

The paper entitled “Resiliencia, educación y sostenibilidad” [Resilience, education and sustainability] has been recognised for its contribution to a sustainable economic model of the city, under the criteria of organisation, methodology and scientific rigour.

This award, endowed with 200 euros, recognises the best paper presented at the 3rd MESVAL Congress "Towards a sustainable city economic model", which took place from 27th to 29th October 2021 in the city of Valencia, organised by the Chair for a Sustainable Economic Model of Valencia and its Surroundings (MESVAL) of the Universitat de València and the City Hall of Valencia.

Researchers registered in the 3rd MESVAL Congress, whose paper proposal was previously accepted by the organising committee, sent the complete paper in due time and form and presented it during the congress, have competed for this award. The evaluation of the papers was carried out by the scientific committee of the congress.

The prize consists of 200 euros for the paper most highly valued for its contribution to a sustainable economic model of the city, under the following criteria: objectives and justification of the study, organisation, methodology and scientific rigour, and contribution of the results to a sustainable economic model of the city.

“Resiliencia, educación y sostenibilidad”

The winning entry, entitled “Resiliencia, educación y sostenibilidad”, analyses the importance for the individual and for society as a whole of being 'resilient', a capacity attributed to those who have managed to overcome the barriers that hindered their success in educational terms, showing certain skills that make them stand out given their socio-economic context.

In countries or regions where there is a higher proportion of resilient learners, it is understood that overcoming adversity is easier, i.e. the education system works better for the less advantaged. The authors conclude that a more and better educated society is a more productive, socially and environmentally conscious and therefore more sustainable society.

Iván Vicente Carrión, José Manuel Pastor Monsálvez and Ángel Soler Guillén, researchers at the Universitat de València, have used the Living Conditions Survey or LCS for the Spanish case as the main database. Thanks to this source of information, more than 3 million data have been processed for all EU countries over a fairly long period of time (2005, 2011 and 2019).

The authors also found that being resilient is doubly beneficial for women, because in addition to overcoming their environment, they lower their own glass ceiling compared to men, further justifying the interest that should be placed on this issue. In conclusion, therefore, it seems necessary to emphasise the leading role of education in the sustainability of society.
