Investment in Sustainability

The University of Valencia’s investment in sustainability is guided by its Strategic Plan, particularly through the action lines of the Office of the Vice-Rector for Economy and Infrastructure, the Office of the Vice-Rector for Sustainability, Cooperation and Healthy Life, and the Office of the Vice-Rector for Equality, Diversity and Inclusive Policies.

Environmental impact of the University of Valencia’s budgets

The management action plans of the Vice-Rectorates for Sustainability, Cooperation and Healthy Life, and for Economy and Infrastructures, in sections 4.2.9 and 4.2.8 respectively, make a significant contribution to environmental objectives. The first foresees an expenditure of €210,546 in the field of environment and sustainability, with the strategic aim of promoting sustainability within the University and raising awareness among its university community. The second, with a budget allocation of more than €9 million in investments and around €7 million in renovations, expansion and improvement of infrastructures (RAM), defines as its strategic objective the progressive transformation of the University’s infrastructures and spaces for energy-efficiency purposes.

In addition, the budget allocated to Cooperation and to Equality and Diversity must be included, amounting to a further 961,437 euros.

This brings the total Sustainability budget to 17,171,983 euros.

The Governing Council plenary session of 11 July 2023 approved the 2023–2026 Strategic Plan of the University of Valencia (PEUV). This plan is the result of a combined analysis of the mission defined by the Statutes, the commitments of the government programme that establish its vision and identity values, and the main conclusions of the strategic analysis carried out based on the study of the environment and the internal analysis of the institution. As a result of this strategic analysis and of the mission, vision and values that guide the University, a set of strategic objectives and strategic action lines (LAE) are defined to achieve these objectives. The set of strategic objectives and LAE planned for the 2023–2026 period constitutes the formulation of the PEUV. The operational plans consist of the initiatives of the vice-rectorates, the Management Office and the General Secretariat planned for each year of the period. Furthermore, to link the strategic objectives of the PEUV with the 2030 Agenda, each objective has been associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This transformation includes actions across all university campuses, with special emphasis in 2025 on improving consumption monitoring systems and other energy-saving measures, enhancing the thermal insulation of buildings, renewing air-conditioning systems based on energy-efficiency criteria, assessing new photovoltaic solar energy projects, and replacing lighting fixtures with LED technology, among other measures.
