Invitación a la presentación
Presentation of the book "Anticatalanismo y transición política" (Anticatalanism and political transition) in Valencia

On Thursday 20 May at 7 pm, the book “Anticatalanism and political transition. The origin of the Valencian conflict (1976-1982)” will be presented at Juan de Mena Street, 18 in Valencia. Juan Luis Sancho Lluna, writer, PhD in History from the UV and author of the book, and Miguel Ángel Piqueras Rambla, economist and ex-manager of the San Pio V Museum, will take part in the event.

Countless pages have been devoted to the Valencian Transition. In the fields of essays, journalism, political science and sociology, we have been offered a narrative of the period in terms of identity; but this book does not have the same objective; it is a history book. Anti-Catalanism has proved to be a formidable political weapon that has been of great benefit to the Valencian right wing. At a historical juncture such as the transition to democracy, it managed to bring together broad traditional social sectors - sociological Francoism -, structuring a whole social movement with a popular, fundamentalist and reactionary base against the political change led by the left that had won the first democratic elections in 1977, as well as the legislative and municipal elections of 1979. The conflict broke out because of the active role played in the reactionary camp by broad social strata of popular extraction who managed to create a climate of tension and violence that convulsed civic life, a whole 'kale borroka' against the democratic political parties instigated by the late-Francoist institutions and the UCD government. The aim is, therefore, to base the political and social causes of the origin of this conflict on history.
