‘Challenges and threats to apiculture in the 21st century’

The Universitat de València continue to create synergies in order to consolidate the project of seasonal universities, bringing out the second edition of the Autumn University of Ayora (UNAY), focused once again on the culture of honey. The university holds this event through the Office of the Vice-Principal for Territorial Projection and Society and in collaboration with the Ayora Town Council, the Diputación of Valencia (Provincial Council of Valencia) and Caixa Popular.

After the success of the inaugural edition in 2020, the second edition will be held on 4 November 2021. In the first edition, we decided to approach honey from a historical perspective, looking at the evolution of beekeeping practice from prehistoric times to the present day. However, in this second one we will analyse the challenges that apiculture faces nowadays, both on the peninsula and in Valencia. To this end, we will bring together accomplished specialists in the field of Sciences to discuss the various problems that threaten bee production, such as the Varroa destructor pest and the widespread use of certain chemicals. At the same time, the consequences for the sector, the possible responses to these problems, as well as the repercussions this may have on the economic, social and territorial levels will be analysed.

In short, the Autumn University of Ayora, town famous for its beekeeping tradition and for the celebration of the Primer Corte de la Miel (First Honey Cut), will once again be a meeting and debate point for this product. It will reflect the transversality and plurality of topics worked on by professionals and researchers from the Universitat of València, as well as the transfer of knowledge between the university and the territory.
