The IUNE Observatory, a tool that analyses the academic and research activity of Spanish public and private universities, highlights that the University of Valencia (UV) has increased the number of scientific citations of its faculty articles by 9.46% between 2020 and 2021, so that it has gone from 605,289 references to 692,047. Regarding the number of publications, the institution reached 32,905 in the 2021 edition, compared to 30,061 in 2020.
With these data, the UV advances from fourth to third in Spain in the number of scientific citations received between one period and the other, and remains fourth in the state in number of scientific publications. In addition, it continues for another year, like the last five editions of the ranking, as the first higher education centre in the Valencian Community.
The IUNE Observatory uses indicators on teachers, recognition, scientific activity, innovation, competitiveness, funding and training capacity. The data included in each update is extracted from the Web of Science platform, and refers to a decade, so that in the 2021 update the data correspond to the 2010-2019 period and the 2020 data correspond to the 2009-2018 interval. Both in the institutional ranking and by subjects, the update on the 21st has included 83 public and private Spanish universities.
In absolute terms, of the publications made by the UV, 17,631 are included in the first quartile, by 16,095 in 2020. Publications in international collaboration have also increased, rising from 14,710 to 17,136. An indicator that rises notably, as it did in the previous edition, is the number of citations per professor of the institution, which in the 2021 edition of the observatory reaches 31.73, compared to 27.61 in 2020, and 22.86 in 2019.
The IUNE Observatory, among other indicators, also offers results by areas, both by number of publications and by number of citations. Thus, by citations, the UV is first in the Valencian Community in five of the six areas of knowledge, and on a Spanish scale it is third in Medicine and Pharmacology, and fourth in Experimental and also in Social Sciences. In addition, he has advanced a position in Arts and Humanities and in Life Sciences. Globally, in all areas the number of UV citations has advanced notably, especially Medicine and Pharmacology (from 180,693 to 265,687 references); Experimental (492,984 in 2021 to 330,069 in 2020), or Social Sciences (492,984 and 330,069).
By number of publications, the UV remains the first Valencian higher education centre also in 5 of the 6 areas analysed: Medicine and Pharmacology (where it gains a position compared to 2020 and is already third in Spain), Experimental (where it also advances a place of Spain and is fourth state); Social Sciences (also fourth), Life Sciences (fifth), and Arts and Humanities (fifth Spanish when also advancing one position).
