The University of Valencia, among the twelve best in the world in Agricultural Sciences in the Best Global Universities ranking

The University of Valencia (UV) has improved for the fourth consecutive year internationally in the Best Global Universities research ranking and is advancing 14 positions this year, to 212 in the world. In Europe, the institution climbs to 88 (9 positions). In Spain it remains the fifth best and is the first Valencian one. By subjects, the UV occupies the twelfth world position in Agricultural Sciences (first in Spain) and is the 68th in the world in Environmental and Occupational Health, in addition to being first in the Valencian Public System in 21 of the 27 classified subjects.

The Best Global Universities ranking is compiled by the U.S. News & World Report magazine to respond to the growing demand for American students who plan to enrol in universities outside their own country. It analyses institutions in more than 80 countries that have been ranked based on 13 indicators that measure their academic performance in research and their global and regional reputation.

Regarding the ranking indicators, the University of Valencia stands out in regional reputation of research (position 98 in the world) which analyses the reputation of the best universities in each region in research for 5 years. In addition, in total citations, the institution advances to world position 193 and also in the number of highly cited articles (among the 1% most cited), where it has moved to position 191 in the world.

Globally, the University of Valencia occupies position 212 (in 2018, for example, it was number 265 in the world), which places it in fifth place of the state, after the universities of Barcelona, Pompeu Fabra and Autonomous of Madrid.

By subjects 43 subjects have been analysed and the UV has been classified in 27. It stands out in Agricultural Sciences, where it occupies the world’s twelfth position and first of Spain. Also in Environmental and Occupational Health (position 68, 24 positions better than in 2020), Physics (110), Geosciences (122, 36 positions better than last year), Economy and Business (151), Arts and Humanities (156), Microbiology (157) and Psychiatry / Psychology (190). At the Spanish level, the UV is the first of the 27 subjects analysed in Agricultural Sciences, Physics, Geosciences and Microbiology; and second in two others: Clinical Medicine and Environmental and Occupational Health.

The indicators used on this classification are bibliometric ones (65%), of scientific excellence (10%) and of reputation (25%). Thus, among the first are full citations, international collaboration, conferences, impact of standardised citations, books or number of publications in the top 10% most cited, among others. As scientific indicators of excellence, the number of top 1% highly cited articles and the percentage of highly cited articles among the 1% of the most cited are also evaluated. Finally, the global and regional reputation of research are also listed as indicators of this ranking. The provider of bibliometric data is the Web of Science-Clarivate Analytics.
