Dolors Corella, Artemi Cerdà, Pablo P. Boix, Gustau Camps-Valls and Francisco J. Barba, researchers at the University of Valencia, are listed in the Highly Cited Researchers 2021, a ranking with the world’s scientific elite in terms of the number of citations of their work on research, according to bibliometric data provider Clarivate Analytics.

Thus, Boix and Corella have a multidisciplinary impact; Cerdà stands out in the field of Agricultural Sciences and Ecology on the one hand and Environment on the other, Camps-Valls excels in Geosciences and Barba stands out in Agricultural Sciences. In 2020, the Valencian academic institution had four specialists in this classification.

Highly Cited Researchers is an annual list that selects the most influential specialists from around the world, for their exceptional research performance, measured by the production of highly cited articles that are in the top 1% in number of citations per field and year in Web of Science Core Collection. The list includes its scientific production during the 2010-2020 period in one or more of the 21 fields used.

The list contains around 6,600 researchers in 2021, 3,800 of whom are researching in specific fields and approximately 2,800 in multidisciplinary fields; this is the fourth year in which some researchers have been identified with multidisciplinary impact.

Dolors Corella, professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the University of Valencia, is the 2018 Jaume I Prize for Medical Research, is a researcher in obesity and nutrition, and group leader of the CIBEROBN since 2006. She is also director of the Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology Research Unit at the University of Valencia since 1998. She has published more than 375 articles in high-impact international journals and has supervised more than 20 doctoral theses. She currently focuses her research on the integration of omics with nutrition and gastronomy to provide a more holistic vision of health. She is a pioneer in the development of Nutritional Genomics.

Artemi Cerdà, Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Valencia, has collaborated in research projects on desertification and development in the United States, the Netherlands, Bolivia, Ethiopia and Israel, among other countries; and he has published more than 200 research articles in journals of international impact. He has been a researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and is a member of the Soil Erosion and Degradation Research Group (SEDER). He is currently researching the evolution of forest and agricultural areas affected by erosion, especially in vine growing areas.

Gustau Camps-Valls is professor of Electronic Engineering at the UV and coordinator of the research group Image and Signal Processing (ISP), http://isp.uv.es, a group of 40 researchers around artificial intelligence for the treatment of images, signals and data. His contributions focus on the development of machine learning algorithms for remote sensing, Earth observation and geoscience data analysis. He is the author of more than 300 articles in international journals, has coordinated more than ten international research projects, holder of an ERC Consolidator Grant project and currently a Synergy Grant project – also from the European Research Council – endowed with 10 million euro to improve climate models with AI and the analysis and interpretation of the Terra system data.

Pablo P. Boix is a researcher at the Materials Institute of the University of Valencia (ICMUV), where his research focuses on the development of new materials and optoelectronic devices for a sustainable future. In 2012 he joined the Energy Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where he led a research line of halide perovskites for optoelectronic applications. In 2016 he worked developing perovskite solar cells in the industrial field in Switzerland and in 2017 he joined the University of Valencia with a Ramón y Cajal contract. He has participated in more than 12 national and international projects and has published more than 100 scientific articles.

Francisco J. Barba is a full professor at the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health. He works in emerging technologies (high hydrostatic pressures, electrical pulses, high voltage electrical discharges, ultrasound, microwaves, and supercritical fluid extraction, among others) to obtain new technological processes. Most of his studies are on the application of these technologies to better and sustainably preserve the nutritional, bioactive and organoleptic characteristics of food, as well as to value waste and agri-food by-products in a sustainable way. He has published more than 380 scientific articles in high-impact journals.
