The CWTS Leiden Ranking ranks selected universities by the number of publications indexed in Web of Science (2015-2018 period) and measures impact and scientific collaboration, open access publishing, and gender diversity. In yesterday’s update, the University of Valencia (UV) is fourth best in Spain in the complete and fractional count. By fields of knowledge, it has gone from fourth to third position in Spanish in Physical Sciences and Engineering and remains third in Social Sciences and Humanities, despite the increase in the centres analysed, which have gone from 963 in 2019 to 1,176 this year. In the fractional count by fields, the institution is the first in Spain in Social Sciences and Humanities.

The indicators of scientific impact in Leiden can be calculated using either a full count method or a fractional one. The first gives a complete weight of one in each publication of a university and the fractioned weights the importance of the publications according to the number of collaborators of the institution.

Thus, the University of Valencia, in the complete count is the first Valencian higher education centre and has improved a position on a European scale, from 86 to 85. Regarding scientific impact indicators, the UV has increased, compared to 2019, the number of articles and has gone from 10,261 to 10,958. Of these, 214 are in the top 1% of the most cited (177 at the previous edition) and 1,357 (1,255 in 2019) are among the 10% most cited. In gender indicators, in 2020 9,793 articles made by women were measured, compared to 9,221 in the previous edition. As indicators of scientific collaboration, the UV has achieved 6,146 articles in collaboration with other countries, for 5,669 in 2019.

In the fractional count, the University of Valencia ranks 1 in the Valencian Community, 4 in Spain, 79 in Europe and 257 in the world. In the corresponding scientific impact indicators, 41 articles of the institution (5 more than the previous year) are among the 1% of the most cited in the world.

As for the CWTS Leiden Ranking by fields and in the complete count, when measuring the number of publications, the University of Valencia is third in Spain in Physical Sciences and Engineering (fourth in 2019), third in Social Sciences and Humanities, and fifth in Biomedical Sciences and Health. In the fractional count of this indicator, the results are, at the state level: first in Social Sciences and Humanities, fourth in Biomedical and Health Sciences; fifth in Life and Earth Sciences, as well as in Physical Sciences and Engineering.

This ranking is led globally by Harvard University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the University of Toronto. In Europe, the top three ranked are Oxford, the College of London and Cambridge, while in Spain the CWTS Leiden Ranking is led by the universities of Barcelona, Autonomous of Barcelona, Autonomous of Madrid and Valencia.
