The University of Valencia (UV) leads six of the eleven subjects in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking by subjects on a Valencian scale, a classification that measures teaching, research, citations, the international perspective, reputation and the industry income at the university level. On a Spanish scale, the institution has improved compared to 2019 in Physics and also in Life Sciences, where it is in the 3-7 and 3-9 ranges, respectively. Another ranking, the Best Global Universities, prepared by the magazine U.S. News & World Report, confirms that the UV is 12th in the world in Agricultural Sciences and 92 in Environmental and Occupational Health.
The Times Higher Education World University Ranking, founded in 2004, provides a ranking of the best universities in the world. In the classification by subjects – updated today Wednesday 28 – it uses 13 performance indicators from the world ranking, grouped into five areas: teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), industry income (2, 5%) and international perspective (7.5%). The bibliometric data provider is Elsevier - Scopus.
Thus, the UV reaches the Spanish position 3-7 in Physics, when in the previous edition it was 8-10. It also reaches the 3-9 rank in Life Sciences, which in 2019 was 5-9. In Law it ranked 4 at the state level.
The six subjects (out of eleven in which the UV leads the Valencian classification are Arts and Humanities, Life Sciences; Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health; Law; Physics; and Psychology.
Ranking Best Global Universities
In addition, in the Best Global Universities ranking, a classification on research and global and regional reputation to respond to the growing demand of North American students who want to study outside their country, the UV has advanced 11 positions and is number 97 in Europe, fifth in Spain and first in the Valencian Community.
The classification – updated yesterday Tuesday 27 – measures 1,500 higher education centres in the world, and the UV is ranked 226, after having also advanced eleven positions with respect to the 2019 data. By subjects, it is number 12 in the world in Agricultural Sciences and 92 in Environmental and Occupational Health.
The Best Global analyses institutions from more than 80 countries, classified based on 13 indicators, grouped into those of bibliometric (65%), scientific excellence (10%) and reputation (25%).
In bibliometric indicators, the UV stands out in: total citations, the institution occupies position 199 in the world and also in the number of highly cited articles (among the 1% most cited), where it is 197 on a world scale and in publications it is 219 out of 1,500 universities.
In regional research reputation it ranks 115th in the world. This indicator analyses the prestige of the best academic centres of higher education in each region under investigation for 5 years.

By subjects, the University of Valencia is among the 300 best in the world in 17 of the 22 areas in which it is classified. In general it advances in most fields, and the best positions of the institution are in Agricultural Sciences (12th in the world, where it has won a place); Environmental and Occupational Health (position 92); Physics (position 111, 15 positions better than 2019), Microbiology (where it advances 35 positions and is 148 in the world); Geosciences (158), Economy and Business (162, 14 positions better than the previous edition); Pharmacology and Toxicology (177); Oncology (184); Arts and Humanities (194); and Psychiatry / Psychology (197).
