WHO?: Dr. ISABEL BLASCO COSTA (Natural History Museum, Geneva, Switzerland)

WHAT?: Understanding the forces promoting diversification of parasite species

WHEN?: Wednesday 14/12/2016 – 12:00 h

WHERE?: Seminar room ICBiBE - SS6 (semisoterrani de l’edifici d’instituts)

ABSTRACT:

The diversification of species is still a major research question in evolutionary biology. Parasitic organisms, despite their numerical dominance in nature and relative importance to human and animal health, are still poorly studied models in speciation research. Life history and habitat characteristics can interact to determine gene flow and genetic structuring of parasitic species at microevolutionary scales, potentially resulting in species diversification at macroevolutionary scales. Using a comparative molecular approach at different evolutionary, ecological and spatial scales, I will present our research on the effect of key life history and habitat features generating genetic variability among platyhelminth parasite populations.
