ABSTRACT:

Global freshwater biodiversity continues to decline at an alarming rate, higher than terrestrial and marine counterparts. This crisis is aggravated by the increasing pressure freshwater ecosystems are subject to due to their strategic value for human development, increasing pressure (e.g., demand for water or energy) and declining resources due to climate change. Among the many threats affecting these systems, hydropower development deserves special attention, for its large global impacts and the increasing support it receives from international initiatives, including the recent Paris Agreement on climate change. Under this scenario, new planning approaches at catchment scale are needed to secure the future persistence of freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem services, while attending to the demand for resources. In this talk, I will introduce the complexities of catchment planning and novel planning approaches to address the peculiarities of freshwater systems and the threats affecting them.
