SEMINAR(i):

Mapping the Study of Biodiversity and Taxonomy: Preliminary Results

WHO?: Dr. Charles Pence (Université catholique de Louvain)

LANGUAGE?: English.

WHEN?: Tuesday 24/05/2022 - 12:30 am.

WHERE?: Seminar Room - SS6 (Institutes building floor -1)

ABSTRACT:

Responding to threats to biodiversity requires understanding not only what’s happening in the natural world, but also the nature and scope of our own scientific efforts. Our group has recently started a new project attempting to better explore this latter question with the aid of methods from the digital humanities. Starting from a corpus of journal articles in conservation biology and systematics, we are working to explore both the conceptual structure of the field – for instance, what is the relationship between different species concepts and our understanding of biodiversity? – and the practical structure of the field – for instance, how are taxonomic effort and conservation effort distributed across the tree of life, or across the world? In this talk, I will both present some preliminary results (on distribution of effort and conceptual structure) and talk through the open hypotheses that the project intends to test.
