Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology was founded by the University of Valencia in 1998 with the mission of conducting basic and applied research, researches training, and services and assistance to the society in the fields of biodiversity and evolutionary biology. The Institute emphasizes an integrative and multidisciplinary approach. Its strongest aspect is its ability to address virtually any question relating to biodiversity and biological evolution from multiple facets, studying from morphology to animal behaviour, from molecular genetics to quantitative variation, theories and methods of integrating complementary areas as molecular biology, genetics, population biology, palaeontology, taxonomy, ecology, ethology and neurobiology. The Institute may apply this capability to studies on the major groups of living organisms, from viruses and bacteria to vertebrate animals and higher plants, and their biological interactions.

The Institute currently consists of approximately fifty staff researchers, along with a similar number of students of doctoral and postdoctoral studies, all grouped in more than fifteen research groups. Its permanent research staff belongs to the following subject areas: cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, botany, ecology, genetics, palaeontology, and zoology.

The Institute directs the Master's Degree Programme in Integrative Evolutionary Biology, and professors are actively involved in other Master's Degree programmes at the University of Valencia. The Institute supports several doctoral programs at the University of Valencia providing materials and guidance for the completion of doctoral thesis.

The Institute's headquarters resides in the Science Park of the Campus of Burjassot of the University of Valencia, though some of its researchers work in the areas of the Botanical Garden of the University of Valencia or the departments of Botany, Microbiology and Ecology, Palaeontology and Zoology at the Burjassot Campus.

As material resources to carry out its mission, apart from own equipment in research group, the Institute has common services, such as mobile park or microscopy. The Institute is supported by the staff team and the Support to Experimental Research Service of the University of Valencia.
