The Central Support Service for Experimental Research (hereinafter SCSIE) is a general service regulated in the Statutes of the Universitat de València (art. 77 to 79, and additional provision 2ª) that provides scientific and technical resources for the performance of analytical tests, with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, as well as technical advice from highly specialised and qualified staff.

The SCSIE is available to the entire university community, public institutions and private companies, with the aim of facilitating innovation, production and transfer of knowledge to contribute to economic and social development in the different areas of research, both basic and applied, health and industry.

It is functionally dependent on the Vice-Rectorate for Research of the Universitat de València

Nowadays, the SCSIE is located in the Burjassot-Paterna Campus, and different Units depend on it, which have been associated to it by instructions of the different Vice-rectors of Research of the Universitat de València, such as the Central Research Unit of Medicine (UCIM), the Laboratory of Environmental Radioactivity (LARAM), and the Laboratory of Social Sciences (Social-Lab) of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

It was created by agreement of the Governing Board of the Universitat de València, in October 1993, with the aim of bringing together the different equipment and services that were scattered around the Burjassot-Paterna Campus, and which were already providing support to the researchers of the same institution. At that time, the previously operating Spectroscopy and Electron Microscopy services were brought together.

The Directors who have been in charge of SCSIE have been:

• Miguel de la Guardia Cirugeda, Professor of the Department of Analytical Chemistry.
• Bernardo Celda Muñoz, Professor in the Department of Physical Chemistry.
• Pedro Carrasco Sorlí, Professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
• M. Dolores Real García, Professor in the Department of Genetics.
• Salvador Gil Grau, Professor in the Department of Organic Chemistry.
• Juan José Borrás Almenar, Professor of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry.
• Eladio Barrio Esparducer, Professor of the Department of Genetics, from June 2020 to the present.

At its creation, the Service had 9 technicians distributed among the Sections of:

• Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1 permanent laboratory officer)
• X-Ray Diffraction (1 medium technician under contract and 1 junior permanent official)
• Mass Spectrometry (1 senior technician under contract)
• DNA and Protein Sequencing (1 medium technician under contract)
• Electron Microscopy (2 permanent senior technicians and 1 permanent laboratory officer)
• Administration (1 administrative assistant)

In 1995, the SCSIE's Internal Regulations were approved, in which 6 Sections are mentioned:

• Electron Microscopy
• X-Ray
• Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy
• Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
• Mass Spectrometry
• Sequencing

In 1996, the Blown Glass Workshop was attached to the SCSIE, with a permanent specialist technician, and the Environmental Radioactivity Laboratory was linked to it.

From that moment on, the Service grew, either through the assignment of existing laboratories or the creation of new sections, with the following evolution:

The Service is located on the Burjassot-Paterna Campus, and different units that have been associated with it on the instructions of the different Vice-Rectors for Research at the Universitat de València depend on it.

It is currently made up of 15 sections which include the following scientific and technical services:

The SCSIE in Burjassot-Paterna develops its services in different nuclei of facilities. The first and most emblematic of these is located in the "Jeroni Muñoz" Research Building. (Dr. Moliner, 50 46100-Burjassot - Valencia) where the SCSIE Administration (ground floor), the Quality Unit (ground floor), the Computer Support Unit (ground floor) and the Sections of:

• Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (Semibasement)
• Powder X-Ray Diffraction (Semibasement)
• Single Crystal X-Ray Diffraction (Basement)
• Mass Spectrometry (Semibasement)
• Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy (Ground floor)
• Microscopy (Semibasement)
• Genomics (Ground Floor)
• Proteomics (Ground Floor)
• Blown Glass Workshop (Ground Floor)
• Cell Cultures and Cytometry (5th floor)
• Statistics (Basement)

The second is in the Faculty of Pharmacy, where the Animal Production and Experimentation section (Animal Facilities) is located.

Also on the Burjassot-Paterna Campus is a greenhouse of the Plant Production section.

The fourth is in the area of the Paterna Campus where the Research Institutes and the Science Park of the Universitat de València are located, where, on the one hand, the Experimental Aquarium Plant section and another Greenhouse of the Plant Production section are located.

With regard to the units associated with SCSIE, one of the main ones is located in the facilities at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (Central Research Unit of Medicine, UCIM), with an independent operation.

In addition, a number of university structures have also been assigned to SCSIE, such as:

• Environmental Radioactivity Laboratory (LARAM), directed by Professor Clodoaldo Roldán, professor of the Department of Applied Physics, and located in the basement -2 of the "Jeroni Muñoz" research building.
• Social Sciences Laboratory (Social-Lab), located in the Faculty of Social Sciences, on the Tarongers Campus.
