Description of research activity:
The group proposes the elaboration of legal research in the field of classical culture from an interdisciplinary perspective that allows us to understand the origin and subsequent evolution of legal institutions that, in one way or another, end up forming part of the current legal systems. The Law is a reflection of the society to which it is directed, but the purpose of this research is to provide information on the consideration that the people of Antiquity have on what they have, as well as on the influence of the Roman tradition on the European Codes. It is intended to influence the reality of research referring to those that are of little treaty and of great interest, as they are usually related to the legal position of the lady, for which thing is proposable to promote research in different areas: 1. Research lines:
  • Roman Law Tradition.Studies on the influence of the reception of Roman law on the formation of European legal thought. These studies enable us to identify common principles, as well as the various interpretations of these principles in European legal systems.
  • Legal Epigraphy. There are numerous epigraphic documents whose content can only be correctly interpreted by legal researchers. These are legal acts which, when correctly interpreted, can provide valuable information on relevant issues in the field of law.
  • Roman Law and Germanic Law.The relationship between Roman law and Germanic legislation among the different peoples who occupied the former territories of the western part of the Roman Empire after its fall in the 5th century has been little studied to date.
  • Legal status of women in Antiquity.Further research is needed on the legal status of women in ancient times, particularly to compensate for the lack of studies with a gender perspective on these issues. This will provide invaluable information for understanding the role that was reserved for them.
  • Roman Law and Comparative Law.The study of comparative law is of great interest for understanding the processes involved in the formation of different legal systems, especially if this comparison is made from the perspective of the Roman influence found in most European legal systems throughout history.
