The project is entitled ‘Sustainable endogenous development at the Chirikyacu native community (San Martín-Perú)’ of the Universitat de València. The initiative provides the inhabitants with an alternative to the exploitation of the area’s natural resources. It also aims at improving the native’s living conditions by promoting sustainable tourism and productive activities.

In order to promote the endogenous development of the community, there have been training sessions on environmental, touristic and healthy issues. The students and teaching staff of the degrees in teacher training, social education, pedagogy, nursing, tourism and the master’s degree in Development Aid have done stays there to support the activities thanks to the subsidies for exchanges and internships.

The project is led by Javier García Gómez from the ERI-Sostenibilidad (Interdisciplinary Research Structure for Sustainability) and it has been awarded within the 500 best social and environmental projects of Latin America. It has reached the 154th place in the general ranking and the 53rd place in the ranking related to the human development, social inclusion and reduction of inequalities.

Since 2008, the UV has been working in the native community of Chirikyacu, which is located at the Peruvian Amazonian jungle, through its internal call of cooperation projects. The Universidad Nacional de San Martín (Perú) collaborates with this project because there is a collaboration agreement since 1998. As a result of the cooperation projects, a hostel to host tourists was built. The native community has expressed its gratitude by naming the facilities as ‘Valencia wasi’ (Valencia House).

With this award the projects that promote the green economy are underlined since it shows that there are local initiatives in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
