Friends and Former Students of the University of Valencia, with the collaboration o the Travel Club Fil-per-Randa, cointinues in March with the cycle of activities which traces the history of the Valencian castles. This month they will approach Castielfabib, in Racó d’Ademús. They will also dedícate two routes to the historical centre of Valencia.
On 9 March, Friends and Former Students will move to Racó d’Ademús to visit Castielfabib and its fortified church. It is the Sant Guillem convent, build in the XIV century by the Augustinian general prior, sir Guillem, duke of Aquitaine. The charm and peace of this landscape was taken by him, so it remained there until his death, in the which hermitage he ordered to build. Nowadays, this monument is in ruins, but little by little it is being restored with particular donations of men and women which, instead, sponsor its stones.
The visit to this monumental treasure-town, guided by Joan V. Candel, of Fil-per-Randa, will include a rural walk for two hours around the outskirts of the town, over the river, until reaching the fortress, the Sant Guillem convent, a unique example in the Valencian Country.
Valencia, inside and out
In March, Friends and Former Students will also dedícate two walks through the heart of the city in the history of Valencia. The same morning, you can choose between a walk through the Carme neigbourhood or another through the historical centre in order to discover the sculptures which embellish the streets and which we have already forgotten.
Popular and bohemian, the Carme is a neigbourhood which still nowadays has serious problems of habitability: lots, dilapidated houses… However, it is in the process of rehabilitation and transformation which aims its integration into the modern Valencia. Joan V. Candel will go with the participants on this tour.
Moreover, a second proposal for this 30 March is the entitled ‘La ciutat de les escultures distretes’. Each day, while people go to work, shopping, or just for a walk, it is easy to go through a vast number of statues or small monuments which are part of the urban landscape and which, however, nobody knows their origin or meaning. They are often memorial monuments of important peope in their time. All this will be discovered by the participants in this activity guided by historian Joan Grifoll.
Setaigües and Les Useres, in April
Friends and Former Students has already advanced part of the programme for April, month in which they will visit the waterways in the lands of the Merchant, Setaigües and Les Useres, in Alacantén. The registration deadline for these trips begins in March and both, along with the trip to Castielfabib, are subsidized by the collective of the University of Valencia.
In Setaigües, they will go for a rural walk through the Water Way. Changing then to the Duc river and the main fountains of the land accompanied by Josep Vicent Valero, actor, philologist and researcher of the local history of Setaigües. At Les Useres, the visitors will go on a pilgrimage to the Sant Joan hermitage of Penyagolosa, a tradition which dates back to the Middle Ages (XIV century) to beg God health, peace and rain. Joan V. Candel will explain the visit.
