Year 2015 was declared as the International Year of Light and Technologies based on light according to Unesco On Wednesday, 3rd June at 19h, Lluís Torner, the director of the Institute of Photonic Sciences , will close the cycle under the title of “Tots plens de nit, buscant la llum” (Everyone full of night, looking for light) of the Espai Ciència del Octubre Centre de Cultura Contemporània, with the conference titled “Wonders made of light. Recent developments in photonic and nanomedicine”.

Light is present in life and that is the object of the study of photonic sciences. But, in fact, the colours which our eyes see are just a small fraction of all the light there really are. Scientists have been studying the light and researching the properties of photons for centuries. The technologies which are used allow us explore the universe, cure diseases and solve an infinity of of problems in the fields of energy, education or agriculture.

The cycle titled “Tots plens de nit, buscant la llum” (Everyone full of night, looking for light) of the Espai Ciència has explored light pollution together with Enric Marco, Joaquim Baixeras and Àngel Morales. Another light workshop has also taken place with Ferando Sapiña and Ana Cros. Furthermore, the audience was amazed because of the optical illusions shown by Álvaro Pons. At last, on Wednesday 3rd June, Lluís Torner will show the last progresses in photonic sciences and its medical applications.

Lluís Torner i Sabata (Berga, 1961) is a full university professor of Universitat Politècnica de Catalonia (UPC) and a director of the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO). Torner investigates in nonlinear optical phenomena. Specially, he is one of the leading researchers in the world in the study of the so called optical solitons and of its applications to the technologies of the information. The IFCO is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence, of international reference in the field of physics. It was one of the institutions which participated in the elaboration of a report on European photonic which demonstrate the strategic importance of photonic in the present European economics and in the following years.

The Espai Ciència of the October Centre of Contemporaneous Culture (c/ San Fernando 12, Valencia) is a stable programme of scientific dissemination sponsored by the Institut d’Estudis Catalans which has the support of Acció Cultural del País Valencià, the Unit Chair for Scientific Dissemination of Universitat de València and other scientific institutions as the CSIC.
