The Universitat de València’s Institute for Human Rights has organized the congress ‘Principia Iuris de Luigi Ferrajoli’, which is being held from April 25th to 27th. Different Spanish law philosophers are going to gather to discuss about the figure of the Italian lawyer. Luigi Ferrajoli (Florence, 1940) is one of the few current lawyers to formulate a complete law theory. A summary of this theory has been reflected on the three volumes of his ‘Principia Iuris’, recently published in Spain by Trotta editions.

Being one of the most important disciples of Norberto Bobbio, Ferrajoli is considered the main philosopher of law guarantism trend, which advocates for the subjugation of all the powers to law. This subjugation would not only entail public powers but also the private ones, and it would extend from national to international powers to guarantee both the civil and the social rigths. Some of his disciples has pointed out that, compared to Kelsen, who is the father of the rule of law, Ferrajoli would be the father of Law Constitutional State. Ferrajoli was judge during eight years, when he joined the movement Magistratura Democrática. In 1970, he became a lecturer and nowadays he is a full university professor at the university Roma III, where he has also been Dean.

Among other experts, the following figures are taking part in the symposium: José Juan Moreso, lecturer of law philosophy, full professor and Principal of Universitat Pompeu Fabra; Javier del Lucas, full professor at Unversitat de València and director of Colegio de España in Paris; Francisco Javier Ansuátegui, full professor at Unviersidad Carlos III in Madrid and chairman of Sociedad Española de Filosofía Jurídica y Política; and Manuel Atienza, full professor at Universitat d’Alacant and director of the journal Revista Doxa. The judge in the Supreme Court, Perfecto Andrés Ibáñez, who introduced Ferrajoli in Spain, is also attending the conference.

Poderes salvajes
On Principia Iuris, the famous Italian journalist, Rossana Rossanda, has stated that ‘his book has not only been thought to deeply experiment a methodological itinerary but to be acted.’
On his book Poderes salvajes, recently published in Spain, Ferrajoli offers an analysis of the current political-institutional, socio-cultural recession focusing on the case of Italy, and he suggests ways for the recovery, like a participative democracy, and criticizes politics, which have become a kind of entertainment.

Young philosphers’ meeting
At the same time, the I Encuentro de Jóvenes Investigadores de la Sociedad Española de Filosofía Jurídica y Política, is taking place, an event which is gathering five hundred young researchers from all around Spain. The students in the Máster en Derechos Humanos, Democracia y Justicia Internacional – organized by the Institute for Human Rights – are having a lecture too. This lecture is titled ‘Diez preguntas a Luigi Ferrajoli’, and the students will be able to discuss not only theoretical matters but current affairs like the military intervention in Lybia or the male supremacy in the Spanish Crown, among others.
