Biography

Alfredo Cortell-Nicolau is a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the University of València and a guest researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. He obtained his PhD from the University of València and subsequently worked at the University of Cambridge as a Marie Curie Fellow. There, he also served as an Associate Lecturer in Applied Statistics and as coordinator of the MPhil in Archaeological Science. Following his time at Cambridge, he was awarded a Humboldt Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, where he maintains an ongoing affiliation.
His research focuses on the application of computational and quantitative analytical techniques, with particular emphasis on the Recent Mesolithic and Early Neolithic of the Western Mediterranean. From a theoretical perspective grounded in Cultural Evolutionary Theory, his work addresses topics such as the morphometric analysis of projectile points, radiocarbon dating, prehistoric demography, and biases in the archaeological record.
He collaborates widely with international colleagues and has published in several leading journals, both general (e.g. PNAS, Scientific Reports, PLOS ONE) and archaeology-focused (e.g. Journal of Archaeological Science, Quaternary International, Geoarchaeology). In addition to regularly serving as a peer reviewer, he is an Associate Editor for Humanities and Social Sciences Communications and a reviewer for the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI).
He has participated in multiple archaeological excavations in Spain and France, including Cueva de la Cocina (Dos Aguas, València), Roquemissou (Montrozier, France), Mas d’Is (Penàguila, València), and Cova de les Cendres (Moraira, Alacant), and currently directs excavations at Cova Negra de Marxuquera (Gandia, València). He is a member of the PREMEDOC (UV) and TICE (MPI) research groups.
