Biography
Sara Calatayud Romero graduated in Pharmacy from the University of Valencia and completed her doctoral studies in the Department of Pharmacology at the same university, receiving the Extraordinary Doctorate Award in 1998. In 1999, she joined the research group led by Drs. Timothy Warner and Jane Mitchell at The William Harvey Research Institute, University of London. She returned as a researcher for the Health Research Fund (ISCIII, February 2001) and initiated a project focused on the analysis of the contribution of gastrin to various digestive pathologies, which was awarded a prize by the Salvat Inquifarma Foundation in 2003. That same year, she received the Young Researcher Award from the Spanish Society of Pharmacology. In 2004, she returned to the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Valencia as a researcher of the Ramón y Cajal Program, and in 2007, she passed the National Qualification Examinations for access to University Teaching Staff. In January 2009, she was appointed to a full professor position in this Department and was promoted to the university's full professorship in October 2023.
Her research work has focused on the study of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in various digestive tract disorders, with particular emphasis on their inflammatory components. She is currently focusing her interest on investigating relevant etiopathogenic mechanisms in inflammatory bowel disease and the development of fibrosis that accompanies this condition and significantly contributes to its complications.
