Biography

Cesáreo Calvo Rigual is a Professor of Italian Philology at the University of Valencia. He received his doctorate in 1993 with a dissertation entitled «Estudi contrastiu del lèxic de la traducción italiana del 'Tirant lo Blanc' (1538),» supervised by Dr. Albert G. Hauf and Dr. Emili Casanova. He has been a professor at the University of Valencia since 1988, where he has taught numerous courses in Italian Language and Italian-Spanish Translation, as well as master's and doctoral programs. His research focuses on the following thematic areas: the history of the translation of Italian works into Spanish and Catalan, monolingual Italian and bilingual Spanish-Italian lexicography, and Spanish-Italian contrastive linguistics. He has numerous publications in these fields. He is the co-author (with Anna Giordano) of the "Diccionario Italiano Herder" (1995, 2003, 2011). She has translated the following works into Spanish for the publisher Cátedra (along with Anna Giordano): "Seis jornadas. La cortesana" by Pietro Aretino, "Galateo" by Giovanni Della Casa, and "La veneciana" by an anonymous 16th-century author; and into Italian (also with Anna Giordano) she has translated the Valencian classic "Curial e Güelfa". She has participated as a member in the various research projects led by Dr. María de las Nieves Muñiz, known as the "Proyecto Boscán." She is currently the Principal Investigator of the project entitled "New Historical and Critical Catalogue of Spanish Translations of Italian Literary and Non-Literary Works (1300-1939)" (PID2020-118134GB-I00), a continuation of the previous projects. He has edited several issues of the journals "Quaderns d’italià," "Cuadernos AISPI," "Quaderns de filologia: estudis lingüístics," and "MonTI: Monografías de Traducción e Interpretación." Among other works, he co-edited, with Emili Casanova, the eight volumes of the "Proceedings of the XXV International Congress of Romance Linguistics and Philology." He is an evaluator for several agencies: ANEP, ANECA, AGAUR, CINECA, etc. He has served as president of the Asociación Española de Estudios Lexicográficos (AELex) and as president and founder of the Asociación Española de Lengua Italiana y Traducción (ASELIT). Since November 2023, he has been a corresponding member of the Accademia della Crusca.
