Biography

César Coll Company (Riba-roja de Túria, Valencia, 1966) has a degree in Physics (1988) and a PhD in Physics (1994) both from the University of Valencia. Since 1997 he has been a Tenured University Professor in the Department of Earth Physics and Thermodynamics at the University of Valencia. From 2010 to date he is Professor of Earth Physics in the same department.

His field of research is Remote Sensing for Earth observation and environmental applications, especially in thermal infrared part of the spectrum, with emphasis on atmospheric and emissivity correction of satellite measurements for land surface temperature retrieval, emissivity-temperature separation from thermal infrared radiances, field radiometry for temperature and emissivity measurement, selection of thermal bands and validation of land surface temperature products provided by satellites. As a result of research on these topics, he has authored 109 international publications included in the Web of Science (WoS) of the Science Citation Index (SCI). Of these international publications, 68 have been in indexed scientific journals, 46 of which occupy the first quartile (Q1) in their corresponding scientific category according to the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), 2023 edition.

The impact of these publications is evident in the number of citations he has received to date (3540), the average number of citations per year in the period 2021-25 (204) and the applicant's h-index (31) according to the most recently available WoS data. In addition, he has published (34) in other scientific journals not included in the WoS, most of them in the Revista de Teledetección, edited by the Spanish Association of Remote Sensing. He has co-authored the chapter "Land Surface Temperature" in the book "Taking the Temperature of the Earth. Steps towards Integrated Understanding of Variability and Change" edited by G. C. Hulley and D. Ghent (Elsevier, 2019, ISBN: 978-0-12-814458-9).

As a result of the research activity carried out, he has been granted with 5 six-year research periods (all possible, the last one in 2021) by the National Agency for Quality and Accreditation (ANECA).

Prof. C. Coll has participated in numerous scientific meetings in the field of Remote Sensing. Regarding communications in Congresses, Conferences and Seminars, it has a total of more than 150, including 9 presentations by invitation in different national and international congresses, and 30 communications included in the ISI Proceedings.

He has been Principal Investigator of 6 competitive projects, of which 4 have been funded by the National R+D+i Plan, one by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the other by the North American Space Agency (NASA). In addition, he has been a collaborating researcher in 27 projects, including 8 from the European Union's Framework Programmes, 8 from the European Space Agency, 8 from the National R+D Plan and 2 from the Generalitat Valenciana. He has carried out pre-doctoral and postdoctoral research stays at the Hydrology Laboratory, Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.

He is a regular reviewer of the most prestigious international journals in the field of Remote Sensing, with more than 100 articles reviewed. As other research and management merits, he has been an evaluator of Research Projects (National R+D+i Plan; National Supercomputing Center-Marenostrum; CONICYT, Chile), member of the Scientific Committee of the XII and XIII National Congresses of Remote Sensing (2007 and 2009), of the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium IGARSS (2007), of the Western Mediterranean Meteorology and Climatology Conference (2008 and 2010), and member of the Organizing Committee of IGARSS (2018). Since November 2010 he has been an expert in the area of Earth Sciences of the National Agency for Evaluation and Foresight (ANEP).

As for the teaching activity, he has been granted with 6 teaching five-year periods, the last one granted on 31/12/2019 (all possible), having taught at the University of Valencia since the 1990-91 academic year, in bachelor's degrees (1st and 2nd cycle), official master's degree and doctoral programs. He has been co-director of the Doctoral Theses of Ms. Raquel Niclòs Corts (2005), Ms. Maria Mira Sarrió (2010), Mr. Joan Miquel Galve Romero (2014), Mr. Federico Piñuela García (2023) and Mr. Jesús Puchades (2025). Since 2012 she has tutored six Master's Degree Final Projects. Since March 2013 he has been Director of the official Master's Degree in Remote Sensing of the Faculty of Physics (University of Valencia), having been a member of the Academic Coordination Committee of the Master's Degree since its implementation in 2008.
