Biography
María José Coperías Aguilar, has a degree in English Philology from the University of Valencia (1985) and a PhD in English Philology from the University of Valencia (1991). She started teaching at the University of Valencia in 1992 and became Senior Lecturer in 2000. She is currently full Professor (2018) of English Philology in the Department of English and German Philology, at the University of Valencia. She has taught a range of courses covering the different areas of English Studies: Literature, cultural studies, linguistics and applied linguistics. She was Vice-Dean of Studies of the Faculty of Philology from 1996 to 2005, and Dean of the Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication from 2006 to 2012, and Director of the Quality Service since 2022. She has been a member of several Department, Faculty and University committees. She is the director of the research group at the University of Valencia British and American Transatlantic Women Writers (BATWoW). She participated in several research projects and is currently a member of two research projects “Women and the Early Novel in English: The European Context (1621-1699) (PROYEXCEL_00186)” and “Contemporary Biographical Fiction: Marginal Figures and Transnational Encounters” (CIGE/2024/50)”. Her main areas of research are English literature written by women, cultural studies, intercultural communicative competence, and the media in English. She has published several critical editions in Spanish of the works of authors such as the Brontë sisters, Elizabeth Gaskell, Jean Rhys and Aphra Behn, as well as Richard Head. She has also co-edited a critical edition of seventeenth-century short narrative for Peter Lang. She has received positive assessment of her research for five six-year periods.
