Daniel Fernández Rodríguez is a professor in the Department of Spanish Philology at the University of Valencia, where he teaches Spanish literature from the Golden Age.
After graduating in Hispanic Philology and Catalan Philology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, he obtained his PhD in Spanish Philology from the same university in 2016, receiving the Extraordinary Prize in all three degrees. His doctoral thesis, supervised by Alberto Blecua and Ramón Valdés, was supported by an FPU grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education, as well as grants for research stays in Oxford and Florence. During his postdoctoral training, he enjoyed a research contract at the University of Neuchâtel and two Juan de la Cierva state grants.
Throughout his academic career, his main line of research has been the theater of Lope de Vega and Spanish literature of the 16th and 17th centuries, which he has approached from three complementary perspectives:
1- Imitation and rewriting. The study of the creative process of Lope de Vega and other authors, particularly in relation to the Italian novella and the little-known theater of the late 16th century, has led him to discover new sources and trace intertextual links between different works.
2- Meter, orthoepy, and authorship. The analysis of the meter and style of certain works has allowed him to correct erroneous attributions to Lope de Vega (La palabra vengada, La Otomana), as well as to compile the corpus of playwrights who are barely remembered today (Cepeda) but were very relevant in the Golden Age.
3- Critical edition. To date, he has produced a total of six critical editions, an essential task for carrying out the study of any work: he has edited five comedies by Lope de Vega (El maestro de danzar, La gallarda toledana, El Grao de Valencia, Virtud, pobreza y mujer and, together with Clara Monzó Ribes, Los bandos de Sena), as well as one by Loyola, Miseno, a play that is practically unknown today but was very important at the time (to the point that Lope rewrote it).
His publications include a monograph on Lope's Byzantine comedies, the aforementioned critical editions, and more than thirty scientific articles published in some of the most renowned international Hispanic studies journals (Bulletin Hispanique, Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, Criticón, Boletín de la Real Academia Española, etc.), as well as fifteen book chapters. He has also coordinated a monograph for the Anuario Lope de Vega (2021), entitled “Los primeros años del teatro comercial en España y el primer Lope (1560-1598)”, as well as Parte XX de comedias de Lope de Vega, together with Guillermo Gómez Sánchez-Ferrer (Gredos, 2021).
He also participates in various publicly funded international research projects, including CATCOM/DICAT, based at the University of Valencia and directed by Teresa Ferrer and Josefa Badía; the PROLOPE group, now under the direction of Gonzalo Pontón and Sònia Boadas; and, more recently, “Classical Theater in Valencia: Heritage and Digital Society” (TECLAVAL), directed by Teresa Ferrer. The result of this research work is more than forty invited lectures and papers that he has presented at various European universities.
In terms of his teaching work, Daniel Fernández lectures on the Bachelor's Degree in Hispanic Studies: Spanish Language and Literature and on the Master's Degree in Advanced Hispanic Studies: Applications and Research. He is currently co-directing Laura Ferrer Blé's doctoral thesis (together with Professor Teresa Ferrer) and is co-director, with Clara Monzó, of an educational innovation project (PIEE) entitled Imitatio. Imitación y adaptación creativa de los clásicos de la Edad Media y los Siglos de Oro. He has also been a tutor for a number of collaboration grants for undergraduate and master's students. Finally, he is the author of several educational editions of Golden Age classics (Lazarillo, Don Quixote, an anthology of poetry, etc.), as well as selections and adaptations of canonical works of Spanish literature.
As for his poetic work, Daniel Fernández has published the poetry collections Las cosas en su sitio (La Isla de Siltolá, 2018, Antonio Colinas Prize) and Las nubes se levantan (Pre-Textos, 2022, Emilio Prados Prize). He recently won the Ciudad de Burgos Prize for La vida por delante, a book that will be published shortly by Visor.
