Biography

Marcel·lí del Olmo earned a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Valencia in 1987. He began his professional career in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at that university, where he has served as a full professor since November 2016.

His research has focused primarily on the yeast S. cerevisiae, covering topics such as DNA and chromatin structure, gene expression regulation, stress signaling, transcription termination, and applications of this microorganism in biotechnological processes (wine and bioethanol production, and biocatalysis). As a result of this work, he has supervised six doctoral dissertations, published more than 60 articles in international scientific journals and six book chapters, and presented 39 papers at conferences.

He has completed research stays at two prestigious research centers: the Institut für Zellbiologie at ETH in Hönggerberg, Zurich (in Dr. José Manuel Sogo’s group) and the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Biology at Tufts University, Boston (in Dr. Claire Moore’s group).

His early research focused on the study of chromatin structure in the yeast S. cerevisiae. Later, during his international postdoctoral training and his first postdoctoral position in Spain, his research centered on the processes of polyadenylation and transcriptional termination, and he also established collaborations with Dr. Ursula Bond at Trinity College Dublin. Between 1997 and 2005, under an agreement between the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Valencia, he conducted his research at that institute. During this time, and to the present day, this researcher has combined basic research in yeast molecular biology with its application to understanding the biotechnological process of wine production.

In recent years, this interest in biotechnology has expanded to include the use of yeasts in biocatalytic processes related to the synthesis of products of industrial and pharmaceutical interest, as well as the development of the Yeast Surface Display methodology, in collaboration with Dr. Cecilia Andreu of the Department of Organic Chemistry at the University of Valencia.

This research has been funded by 21 projects from the University of Valencia, the Ministry of Education and Science, and the Valencian Regional Government, in some of which he served as principal investigator (PI). In addition, he has entered into three contracts with private companies related to wine yeasts (Danstar Ferment) or bioethanol production (IMECAL, CIEMAT), which he has supervised as principal investigator (PI).
