Biography

Dr. Marcel S Claro is a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the Universitat de València, specializing in semiconductor physics, epitaxy, and advanced electronic and optoelectronic devices. He obtained his PhD from the University of São Paulo (Brazil), where he worked on infrared photodetectors based on III–V quantum wells and quantum dots, including the development of novel high-density and submonolayer quantum dot systems, as well as a read-out integrated circuit (ROIC) prototype enabling integrated MIR detection.

He subsequently held research positions at the City College of New York (USA), where he focused on II–VI semiconductor epitaxy, hybrid infrared devices, and demonstrated the first epitaxial growth of topological insulator quantum dots, and at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL, Portugal), where he established a research line on two-dimensional materials such as GaSe, InSe, and In₂Se₃, pioneering their heterostructures and device integration. He also contributed to spintronics research, working on magnetic tunnel junctions and neuromorphic memory devices.

From 2022 to 2025, he was a distinguished researcher at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Spain), where his work focused on thermal transport in thin films and oxide epitaxy using pulsed laser deposition. His current research interests include epitaxial growth of complex materials, low-dimensional systems, and next-generation electronic, photonic, and neuromorphic devices.
