Biography

Emiliano Treré is a Beatriz Galindo Distinguished Professor at the University of Valencia and a Reader in Data Agency and Media Ecologies at the School of Journalism, Media, and Culture at Cardiff University. With over 20 years of experience, his research focuses on digital activism, critical data studies, algorithm studies, and digital disconnection, with a particular emphasis on Latin America and the Global South. Fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian, he has authored five books and published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles in seven languages. He is the co-founder of the Big Data from the South initiative and co-director of the Data Justice Lab, a globally recognized research center exploring the intersections between datafication, artificial intelligence, and social justice. He has secured over two million euros in research funding through grants and projects. His work has been recognized with multiple awards, including the ICA Outstanding Book Award and Honorable Mention (Activism, Communication, and Social Justice Interest Group), the MeCCSA Award for Best Academic Article of the Year, and the Outstanding Doctoral Supervisor Award at Cardiff University’s Enriching Student Life Awards. He also holds accreditations from ANVUR, ANECA, and the R3 certificate as an established researcher, and is an affiliate of the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE).
