Mónica Giménez Marqués (1984, Valencia) is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Chemistry and a group leader at the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol) of the Univertsity of Valencia. She holds a degree in Chemistry and a Master's degree in Nanoscience and Molecular Nanotechnology from the University of Valencia. She trained in coordination chemistry and molecular magnetism under the supervision of Prof. Coronado, obtaining her PhD in 2013 from the same university.
She then shifted her focus to porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials under the guidance of Dr. Christian Serre and Dr. Patricia Horcajada at the Lavoisier Institute in Versailles, France, where she contributed to their pioneering use in biomedicine and biotechnology. In 2015, she joined the Institut des Matériaux Poreux in Paris, France, with a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship to develop heterometallic MOFs and their application in heterogeneous catalysis. During this time, she was selected to attend the 67th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting.
In 2018, she joined ICMol as a Juan de la Cierva researcher (first classified in Chemistry). She began her independent career supported by the La Caixa Junior Leader Incoming Fellow program (2019) to lead the development of nanostructured MOFs and related hybrid materials, receiving recognition such as the “Young Talent Award of the Valencian Community” (2018) and the “City of Algemesí Scientific-Technical Award” (2019) for young researchers.
Since 2020, first as a Ramón y Cajal researcher and now as Assistant Professor, she has led the Crystal Engineering Lab at ICMol. The team focuses on the design, synthesis, and advanced characterization of porous hybrid materials to study their fundamental properties and applications in fields related to energy, the environment, and biomedicine. At ICMol, she coordinates one of the strategic research lines of the ‘María de Maeztu’ Excellence Program (periods 2020-2024 and 2025-2031). Her independent career has been recognized with the RSEQ-Sigma-Aldrich Young Researcher Award (2021) and the "Beca Leonardo a Investigadores y Creadores Curturales" form BBVA Foundation (2022).
