Biography

José Juan Castelló Pastor is Lecturer of Private International Law at the Universitat de València. He holds a Law Degree (2000), LLM from Queen Mary College, University of London (2001), PhD in Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Valencia (2015), Extraordinary Doctorate Award (2016/2017), Juan de la Cierva-MINECO postdoctoral fellow (2016). He has been awarded two six-year research periods by the CNEAI. 

Author of several articles in national and international journals on technology, contracting and intellectual property; and of two monographs (‘Search engines and copyright: infringement and liability’ 2016 and ‘Digital damages and personality rights: determination of the competent court in international conflicts originating in the network’ 2022). Director of the collective work ‘Desafíos jurídicos ante la integración digital: European and international aspects’, Aranzadi (2021) and “Análisis del reglamento (UE) de servicios digitales y su interrelación con otras normas de la Unión Europea”, Aranzadi (2024) ; co-director of the work “Derecho de contratación electrónica y comercio electrónico en la Unión Europea y en España”, Tirant Lo Blanch (2021), as well as editorial secretary of the “Comentarios a la Ley de Propiedad Intelectual” (2017), directed by professors Palau Ramírez and Palao Moreno and edited by Tirant Lo Blanch (2017). Director of the international conference ‘The protection of rights in the digital environment’ (2019, 2021 and 2023 respectively). He has participated in various national and international conferences as a speaker and presenter. His areas of expertise are copyright law, e-commerce, digital services and private international law.

Principal Investigator of the research project funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the European Union (NextGenerationEU funds) entitled ‘Towards a people-centred digital transition in the European Union’ (2022-2024). Previously, PI of the emerging research project R+D+i funded by the Generalitat Valenciana (2019-2021) ‘The protection of rights in the digital environment: new challenges, challenges and opportunities’. 

She has undertaken research stays at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property and Competition in Munich (2012), Fordham University (2013-14), the University of Bologna (2016), the University of Mainz (2017) and Columbia University (2018 and 2022), the latter with the José Castillejo-Ministerio Edudacion Foreign Mobility Stays grant (2021). He is a member of the research group of the Universitat de València ‘Grupo de Estudio del Derecho Privado Europeo y Digital’.
