J. Calbo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Chemistry and a researcher at the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol) at the University of Valencia (UV). He obtained his PhD in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling with academic honors from the Universitat de València (UV) in March 2017, under the supervision of Prof. Enrique Ortí and Dr. Juan Aragó, working on the computational study of electroactive molecular and supramolecular entities. During his PhD, he carried out a research stay under the supervision of Prof. Julia Contreras-García at the Laboratoire de Chimie Théorique (Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris), where he studied the nature of noncovalent interactions governing supramolecular donor–acceptor derivatives and azo-based photoswitches.
In 2018, he undertook a two-year postdoctoral stay in the group of Prof. Aron Walsh (Department of Materials, Imperial College London), focusing on the theoretical study of redox-active porous crystalline materials. Joaquín joined the Department of Physical Chemistry at the University of Valencia as an Assistant Professor in 2019 and was promoted to a permanent position as Associate Professor in November 2023.
J. Calbo is a researcher at the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol), a research center distinguished with the “María de Maeztu” Unit of Excellence accreditation. He is a member of the research group led by Prof. E. Ortí (Molecular Materials Theoretical Chemistry Group) and collaborates with several theoretical and experimental groups at ICMol, Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Imperial College London (ICL), and Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), among others. His main research interests include: (i) computational modelling of supramolecular donor–acceptor complexes, helical aggregates, and supramolecular polymers; and (ii) the design and ab initio characterization of electroactive hybrid organic–inorganic materials.
Joaquín regularly supervises undergraduate students (Final Degree Projects) and co-supervises MSc students (notably within the Erasmus Mundus TCCM Master’s programme), PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers. He actively participates in scientific conferences and seminars, and his research results are published in international peer-reviewed journals in the fields of Physical Chemistry, Materials Science, and Multidisciplinary Chemistry. His research is financially supported by regional, national, and European funding programmes.
