Biography

Santiago Vicente Llavata is Associate Professor at the Department of Spanish Philology at the University of Valencia. He holds a degree in Hispanic Philology and Catalan Philology from the Universitat de València, and a PhD in Hispanic Philology (2010) from the same University with the thesis Estudio histórico de la fraseología en la obra literaria de don Íñigo López de Mendoza, directed by Dr. M.ª Teresa Echenique Elizondo. He was awarded in three consecutive internships (2004, 2005 and 2006) a lexicography, terminology and toponomastics scholarship at the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua. Apart from this philological training, he has specialized in the field of language and literature teaching with the completion of a Master's Degree in Language and Literature Didactics Research at the University of Barcelona.

Prior to his current professional activity, he entered by competitive examination in 2007 (career civil servant [BOE 10.11.2008]) to the Corps of Teachers of Secondary Education and Baccalaureate in the specialty of Spanish Language and Literature, and deployed his teaching activity in different schools in Mallorca and Valencia. Simultaneously to his work in secondary education, he worked as an part-time professor in the Department of Spanish, Modern and Latin Philology at the Universitat de les Illes Balears (2010-2011), as well as in the departments of Spanish Philology (2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018) and Didactics of Language and Literature (2014-2015 and 2015-2016) at the Universitat de València. From the 2019-2020 academic year, he is involved in a teaching innovation group of interdisciplinary nature Expanding diversities through GRUPal, developed at the Universitat de València.

He is part of the research group UV HISLEDIA (Historia e historiografía de la lengua española en su diacronía [GIUV2013-080]), directed since its foundation by Dr. M.ª Teresa Echenique Elizondo and, currently, directed by Dr. María José Martínez Alcalde, in whose framework he has participated in different competitive research projects (see, below, the section referring to projects). One of the most relevant scientific results of the HISLEDIA group is the elaboration of the lexicographic work DHISFRAES. Diccionario histórico-fraseológico del español. Tarea lexicográfica del siglo XXI. Combinaciones de carácter locucional prepositivo y adverbial. MUESTRA ARQUETÍPICA (Peter Lang, 2021). In the framework of this scientific group, he also participated in a multitude of congresses and academic forums at national and international level (Spain, Germany, France, Israel, Peru, Italy, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, etc.), both by means of oral communications and invited conferences. He has also been a member of the Organizing Committee of different scientific initiatives (conferences and congresses) promoted by the HISLEDIA group, such as the recent XIII Congreso Internacional de la Sociedad Española de Historiografía Lingüística, held in Valencia in April 2022. He has completed teaching and research stays at the Hogeschool Van Utrecht (Holland, 2001), at the Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia (Italy, 2019) at the Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna (Italy, 2019), at the Universität Leipzig (Germany, 2023) and at the Instituto Politécnico do Porto (Portugal, 2024).

He is the sole author of the monograph Estudio de las locuciones en la obra literaria de don Íñigo López de Mendoza (marqués de Santillana). Hacia una fraseología histórica del español (Universitat de València, 2011), and co-author, together with Francisco P. Pla Colomer, of the book La materia de Troya en la Edad Media hispánica. Historia textual y codificación fraseológica (Iberoamericana/Vervuert, 2020). In addition, he participated as a writer in the preparation of the Diccionari de sinònims, antònims i idees afins (Edicions Bromera, 2007). His scientific production is completed with the publication of articles and reviews in different high impact journals (Revista de Filología Románica, Revista de Literatura Medieval, Vox Romanica, Nueva Revista de Filología Hispánica, Zeitschrift für Romanische Philologie, Verba: Anuario galego de Filoloxía, Romanische Forschungen, Círculo de Lingüística Aplicada a la Comunicación, Anuario de Estudios Filológicos or Revista de Filología de la Universidad de La Laguna, among others), as well as book chapters in publishers of excellence (Cilengua, CSIC, Tirant Lo Blanch, Peter Lang, etc. ). He also maintains a regular activity as an external evaluator in different scientific journals from Spain, United States, Chile, Mexico, Costa Rica and Poland.

His main lines of research are:

  • The history of the Spanish language in contact with other peninsular languages and linguistic modalities (with a special incidence in the domains of Occitan, Catalan and Aragonese).
  • Historical phraseology and phraseography.
  • Historical paremiology and paremiography.
  • Historical lexicology and lexicography.
  • The integral philological study of the work of Don Íñigo López de Mendoza (Marquis of Santillana) within the broad framework of medieval Hispanic literature.

In terms of University management, he has been coordinator of the Spanish Language Teaching Unit, as well as coordinator of the first year of the Degree in Hispanic Studies: Spanish Language and its Literatures for three consecutive academic years (2019-2020, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022). He has been a specialist of the subject of Spanish: Language and Literature II for the EVAU exams during the academic year 2022-2023, and currently is responsible for the subject of Spanish for the University entrance exams for those over 25, 40 and 45 years old.
