Biography

LUIS POMER MONFERRER. Doctor of Classical Philology from the Universitat de València. Professor of Latin Philology in the Department of Classical Philology at the same university, where I have been teaching since 1991. Secondary school Latin teacher on leave of absence, with 23 years' experience as a high school teacher.

I am currently the coordinator of the Master's Degree in Secondary Education in Classical Languages and Cultures at the University of Valencia, the University's Latin specialist for the PAU (University Access Exams), and head of the Latin Teaching Unit in the Department of Classical Philology. I have also been the department secretary.

All of my university teaching has been at the University of Valencia. I have taught classes in all of the philology degrees in the Faculty and in Translation and Interlinguistic Mediation, as well as in the Faculty of Geography and History. My teaching in the bachelor's and master's degrees in Classical Philology has covered all kinds of subjects: currently Latin syntax and Virgil's Aeneid, and in recent years also Latin elegiac poets. I have taught classes in the Master's Degree in Language and Literature Research at the Faculty of Philology, Translation, and Communication, and I continue to do so in the secondary education program in classical languages and cultures, which I coordinate. My educational publications include the books Antología de las más famosas historias de amor (Akal, 2010), with Emilio Sales, and Traducción y recepción de la cultura clásica (Psylicom, 2012), with Ángel Narro.

I have participated and continue to participate in numerous faculty committees, especially those related to hiring, as well as in the editorial board of the journal Quaderns de Filologia.

In terms of research, my thesis on indirect speech in the work of Quintus Curtius Rufus was awarded the SEEC prize for the best thesis in Latin philology in 2002. This has led to several articles on Latin syntax. My research has focused on three areas, in which I have participated in various research projects. 1. Translation and reception of classical culture in Castilian and Catalan literature. Research projects: “Fuentes griegas de la literatura catalana medieval", "Estudi de les fonts grecollatines del Tirant lo Blanc.” I have collaborated with Emilio Sales, a specialist in Castilian books of chivalry, on the publication of various works, including articles in Stylos and QFELit. Among the numerous works on the reception of classical literature, the entry “Edad Media” in the Diccionario hispánico de la traducción y recepción clásica (Guillermo Escolar, 2021) stands out. 2. Christian literature. Among the most notable publications in this field, derived from the projects, are three articles on the controversy adversus Iudaeos, especially the dialogues, published in Myrtia (209), Fortunatae (2019), and RELat (2020). Others appear in Ilu (2013) and Révue des Études Tardo-Antiques (2015). 3. Valencian humanism. Research projects: "Estudio de textos latinos humanísticos de autores valencianos de los siglos XIV-XVIII: relevancia de los mismos en el contexto europeo", "Las retóricas neolatinas de Fadrique Furio Ceriol y Andrés Sempere: edición, estudio y traducción". The result of this project is the edition with Spanish translation of Furio's Institutiones Rhetoricarum (PUV, 2022) and Andreu Sempere's Methodus oratoria, soon to be published, both in collaboration with colleagues Ferran Grau, Josep Lluís Teodoro, and Concha Ferragut. Other publications on humanism: collaboration on the Spanish translation of Las Disciplinas by Luis Vives (Ajuntament de València, 1997), on the edition of Monarquía Mística by Lorenzo de Zamora (Peter Lang, 2022), and publication in Calamus Renascens (2012), as well as two entries in the Diccionario biográfico y bibliográfico del humanismo español (Ed. Clásicas, 2012).

In the field of translation, I am the coordinator of two collections of bilingual translations: the Latin classics series in the Ariadna bilingual Latin-Valencian collection and the Rhemata Latin texts bilingual Latin-Spanish collection. I edited issue 15 of the journal MonTI (Monografías de Traducción e Interpretación) entitled “Translations of Classical Languages and Sacred Texts: Hermeneutics and Methodologies”. In it, I published the introductory article: “Classical Languages and Translation: Sacred Texts.”
