Biography

Máximo Cobos is Full Professor in the area of Signal Theory and Communications at the University of Valencia, where he has been developing his teaching and research activity since 2011. He holds a PhD in Telecommunication Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de València (2009), where he received the highest distinction, Cum Laude with International Mention, after completing his degrees in Telecommunication Engineering (2006) and Technical Engineering in Telecommunications at the University of Alicante (2003), both awarded with Honours. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Technologies, Systems and Networks of Telecommunications and a University Specialist Diploma in Business Management, both from the Universitat Politècnica de València.

His research career has been internationally recognized in the fields of signal processing and artificial intelligence applied to acoustic engineering and multimedia technologies, with contributions that have become reference points in areas such as acoustic source localization and separation, as well as spatial audio. His PhD thesis was awarded by the Spanish Official College of Telecommunication Engineers (COIT) and highlighted by EURASIP (European Association for Signal Processing) as one of the most downloaded from its repository. Among his most influential contributions is the “Modified SRP-PHAT” algorithm, widely cited and adopted as a reference method in the technical literature on sound source localization. He has carried out research stays at leading institutions such as TU Berlin, TU Wien and Politecnico di Milano—where he was also a visiting professor—and has collaborated closely with top international researchers in the field of audio and signal processing. His scientific impact has led him to serve on prestigious technical committees such as those of EURASIP, IEEE and the European Acoustics Association, where he has been an elected member and currently sits on the Board of Directors.

Throughout his career, Dr. Cobos has participated in numerous competitive research projects, acting as principal investigator and coordinator in several of them, and fostering collaborations with both academic institutions and technology companies. His work has also resulted in industrial applications, particularly in the field of acoustic accessibility. On the editorial front, he has played a prominent role as associate editor and senior area editor for high-impact scientific journals in his field. In addition, he has served as reviewer and panel member for scientific evaluation committees at national and international levels, collaborating with research agencies in countries such as Spain, Italy, Ireland, Argentina, and the Czech Republic.

At the University of Valencia, Dr. Cobos has been one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Signal Theory and Communications area, leading from its inception the SPAT (Signal Processing and Acoustic Technology) research group, which is part of the HiPIS (High-Performance and Intelligent Systems) collective. He directed the Master’s Degree in Telecommunication Engineering (2014–2023), served as Coordinator of the Degree in Telematics Engineering (2018–2020), and currently serves as Head of UVOcupació at the University-Business Foundation ADEIT, where he promotes employability and engagement between the university and the professional environment. Additionally, from 2012 to 2023, he was a member of the Regional Board of the Official College of Telecommunication Engineers of the Valencian Community, actively contributing to strengthening ties between the academic, professional and institutional spheres.
