Su extensa trayectoria investigadora se ha focalizado esencialmente en helmintos parásitos y vectores de enfermedades parasitarias, destacando el interés en Salud Pública. Sus investigaciones se han centrado y siguen focalizándose en enfermedades parasitarias sobre todo zoonóticas y de transmisión vectorial, como Fascioliasis, Schistosomiasis y Enfermedad de Chagas, pero también en Malaria, sin olvidar varios años iniciales de investigación fundamental en ecología y evolución en el modelo helmintos/micromamíferos. Las contribuciones multidisciplinares sobre Fascoliasis humana deben ser resaltadas, por cuanto su impacto conduce a la OMS a incluir a esta enfermedad dentro de las prioritarias de la humanidad. Cabe destacar muchos de sus descubrimientos en etiología, transmisión, epidemiología, origen y dispersión geográfica, inmunopatología, diagnóstico, tratamiento y control. Frutos de dichas investigaciones son la participación en numerosos proyectos nacionales e internacionales, en su mayoría como IP, habiendo publicado mas de 450 artículos en revistas científicas, libros y enciclopedias en los campos de la Parasitología, Medicina Tropical, Salud Pública, Ecología, Biología Molecular, Genética y Evolución, de las cuales alrededor de 230 en revistas de impacto internacional indexadas y algunas de las mismas habiendo alcanzado el grupo del 1% de artículos más citados en su disciplina a nivel mundial en un año concreto, sus conferencias invitadas por todo el mundo son innumerables (más de 950 comunicaciones). Miembro de un sinfín de comités internacionales, tanto de centros y agencias de evaluación de diferentes países como de revistas y editoriales científicas. Todo este contexto de gran producción científica de alta calidad y reconocimiento mundial le ha llevado a ser un autor muy citado, con una puntuación de interés de investigación de 7613 (según ResearchGate) e índices muy altos dentro del campo de la Parasitología: A) Web of Science : índice h=63; suma de citas=11.2036; promedio de citas por ítem=43,4; B) Scopus: 67, 12.858, 49,6; C) ResearchGate: 74, 16652, 46,9. La importancia de la ayuda a la cooperación internacional con países en vías de desarrollo, llevada a cabo a través de la lucha contra las enfermedades parasitarias, es precisamente el trasfondo del reconocimiento como Chamlong-Tranakchit Harinasuta Lecturer (2003), el Premio 'Importante' de la ciudad de Valencia (2008), la Medalla de Plata de la Société Française de Parasitologie (2008), la Medalla de la European Federation of Parasitologists por dos veces (2004 y 2008), el Reconocimiento de 'Investigador de Elite en Ciencias de la Salud' (2010), la 'Medalla Alphonse Laveran' (2017), y la 'Medalla López-Neyra' (2019), entre muchas otras distinciones.
