Biography

Ángela Medina Calvo is a predoctoral researcher at the Institute for Research in Social Welfare Policies (POLIBIENESTAR) of the University of Valencia (UV). She graduated in Sociology from the UV, where she subsequently completed a Master's Degree in Economic Policy and Public Economics and a Master's Degree in Secondary Education Teaching (specialising in the area of Vocational Training, Socio-Cultural and Community Services). She is currently enrolled in the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences at the University of Valencia, with her doctoral thesis focusing on the care work dimension in the platform economy. The research is funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the University Teacher Training Programme (FPU21/04938) and the R&D&I project PID2023-146669OB-I00/Knowledge Generation, 'Gender Platformization of the Healthcare Ecosystem. A Feminist and Intersectional Analysis (CAREFEM)'.

The subject of her research is the Sociology of Work. Prior to her doctoral thesis, her research activity focused on the relationship between the university and the changes that the world of work has undergone in recent decades, as evidenced by her publication of the article 'The "personal brand" in the academy: the processes of subjectivation in the working conditions of university professors'. After commencing her doctoral research, she has continued to study the changes of work in the platform economy from an intersectional gender perspective. In 2024, she undertook a research stay at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Feminist, Women's and Gender Studies (CINEF) of the Pablo de Olavide University (Seville, Spain), where she has been a collaborator since that year.

In terms of teaching, she is affiliated with the Sociology of Work Unit of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. She is also a member of the Consolidated Educational Innovation Project “Gender Perspective in University Teaching of Labour Relations and Human Resources degree” of the UV (INNOVAGEN_UV-SFPIE_PIEC-3325277), directed by Dr. Empar Aguado Bloise (Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology) and Dr. Elena Garcia-Testal (Department of Labour Law and Social Security). Furthermore, he has authored the Manual de Sociologia del Treball in collaboration with Dr. Antonio Santos-Ortega and Dr. David Muñoz-Rodríguez.
