Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Informatics at the University of Valencia (UV), with a career focused on Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. His area of expertise is Computer Graphics and Graphics Technologies.
He obtained a degree in Physics in 1992 and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering in 1998 from the UV, with the highest qualification of Sobresaliente Cum Laude (Outstanding with Honors). His teaching career began in 1995, having progressed through the roles of assistant, associate, and tenured professor. His work focuses on Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) and Simulation. He conducted key official research stays abroad, notably at the Nissan Research & Development Center / Medialab - MIT in Cambridge-Massachusetts, USA (1995, 1996-1997, 1997) and at the Technical University of Darmstadt (2000, 2007).
His research work is recognized with four research sexenios and one technology transfer sexenio (2002-2009 period), and he has positively exceeded the evaluation for six teaching periods (quinquenios). He has published more than 60 scientific articles in specialized journals (several T1/Q1 JCR) and has over 100 peer-reviewed conference communications, receiving international Best Paper Awards.
He has been the Principal Investigator (PI) in more than 40 competitive R+D+i projects, in which he has participated continuously since 1996. He has led large-scale European projects such as EMPOWER and SILKNOW, the latter being awarded the Europa Nostra Award for Best European Research Project. He has also been PI for more than 150 university-industry collaboration projects (art. 83 and art. 60).
His commitment to technology transfer is evidenced by the founding of technology-based companies (Spin-offs) and the ADAPTA Foundation for the transfer of technological developments related to neurodivergence and autism. Furthermore, he is an inventor on multiple patents with real exploitation by entities such as Dragados ACS, Casa Batlló S.L.U., and Fundación Orange.
In teaching, he holds the maximum of six recognized teaching quinquenios, the last one granted in 2022. He has taught over 4500 hours at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels and has excellent student evaluations. He has supervised or co-supervised 14 Doctoral Theses, all with the highest qualification of Sobresaliente Cum Laude.
His management experience is extensive and qualified: He has been the Director of the University Institute of Robotics (IRTIC) in two periods (2019–2022 and 2010–2013). He is the Director of the ARTEC Research Group since 1996. He has directed the SISTEM Chair (2015-2019) and the Indra-Fundacion Adecco Chair (2011-2016).
He was the President of the Curriculum Development Commission (CEPE) for the Bachelor's Degree in Multimedia Engineering (2008-2010).
He is the manager and person in charge of key infrastructure at the UV, including the Cylindrical Immersive Visualization System (VISIONARIUM), the Tetracanal Immersive Visualization System (CAVE), the Immersive Simulation Cabin, the Integrated Center for Production and Training in Interactive 3D Multimedia Environments, and the Infrastructure for Visualization, Simulation, and Management of Massive Data in Engineering Environments.
