Biography

Federico Pallardó has been a Professor of Physiology at the University of Valencia since 2000. He graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Valencia and received his doctorate, cum laude, in 1986 from the same university. He completed his studies in the United Kingdom and the United States, with stays at Oxford University (1985-1986) and Harvard Medical School (1989-1991). He was also a visiting professor at Chicago Medical School. He held a FPI fellowship from the Ministry of Science and Technology and obtained a NATO Fellowship for his postdoctoral stay in the US. He has served as director of the doctoral program at the Faculty of Medicine and is currently director of the UV's Master's Program in Rare Diseases. He is a visiting professor at several postgraduate programs. He has supervised 23 doctoral theses, several of which have been awarded has international doctorates and extraordinary awards.

He served as Executive Coordinator of the Central Medical Research Unit (2004-2012), Vice Dean of Research (1999-2000 and 2005-2012), and finally Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (2012-2018). He was also Secretary of the European Society for Free Radical Research (SFRR) and a member of its Steering Committee for several years. He is a member of the Governing Board of the INCLIVA Research Institute. He is the Training Coordinator and a member of the Steering Committee of the Networked Biomedical Research Center for Rare Diseases, an agency of the Carlos III Health Institute. He is the Scientific Director of the CIBERER-BIOBANK rare disease sample biobank.

His main area of ​​research focuses on the pathophysiology of rare diseases that involve oxidative stress processes and their epigenetic regulation. With six recognized six-year research periods (sexenios), he is the author of more than 230 scientific articles and book chapters in international journals. He has maintained continuous funding as principal investigator of research projects at both the regional, national, and international levels for more than 30 years. He is group leader at CIBERER and at the Health Research Institute of the Hospital Clínico de Valencia (INCLIVA), where he coordinates the rare diseases area. Among other recognitions, he has received the García Blanco Medal for young researchers, the Merk-Serono Award for research in rare diseases, several innovation awards, and the Valencian Community Award for Merit in Research. In 2021, he received the SFRR (Europe) Annual Lecture Award and the 2021 Rotary Flame Award. He is a full member of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Related Sciences of the Valencian Community, where he holds the "Physiology" chair.

Finally, in terms of knowledge transfer, he is a co-inventor on several patents and a founding partner of Epidisease S.L., a spin-off company from the University of Valencia focused on epigenetic developments.
