Raúl Peña-Ortiz obtained his degrees in Computer Engineering and a PhD in Computer Science from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) in 2000 and 2013, respectively.
His professional experience spans 25 years in the design and development of distributed solutions, with a particular focus on the application of scientific knowledge to solve industrial problems related to web applications, their architectures, optimal deployments, and performance evaluation. Over the years, he has participated in more than 60 national and European R&D&I projects and contracts, leading approximately 25 of them. He has published several articles in JCR-indexed journals and has participated in more than a dozen relevant national and international conferences. As a result of this research activity, he was awarded two six-year research evaluation periods (sexenios) in 2022 and 2023. In addition, he was a member of the expert panel of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation for the evaluation of R&D&I projects (2019–2021), and of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation for the evaluation of Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) on Cloud Infrastructure and Services within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (2021). On the other hand, his teaching career has been mainly developed in several undergraduate and master’s degree programmes at the School of Engineering of the University of Valencia (UV), which awarded him his first five-year teaching evaluation period (quinquenio) in 2021. He has participated in 6 teaching innovation projects and has supervised 16 Final Degree Projects and 15 Master’s Thesis.
He is currently an Associate Professor (Profesor Permanente Laboral) in the Department of Computer Science at the UV, where he carries out his teaching and research activities in the area of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. His research is conducted within the High Performance and Intelligent Systems Research Group (HiPIS) and focuses on the design and evaluation of distributed architectures deployed in the cloud. He teaches in the Bachelor’s Degrees in Multimedia Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Telematics Engineering, as well as in the official Master’s Degree in Web Technology, Cloud Computing, and Mobile Applications.
Previously, he worked at several universities, research centres, and software companies. He was a senior researcher at UPV and at the Instituto Tecnológico de Informática; a lecturer and researcher at the Universidad Técnica de Ambato; and an part-time lecturer at the UV for more than seven years. He also worked as a computer engineer in the DICAT Research Group and in the Human Resources Service at UV, and as a visiting researcher at Coventry University, Trinity College Dublin, Universitat Jaume I, and Universiteit Antwerpen. In addition, he developed his professional career in industry as a project manager and software architect in the Innovation Department of iSOCO.
