Biography

My research work has focused on various areas of ancient Prehistory: the study of the Middle and Upper Paleolithic and Prehistoric Art. My most relevant contributions are the characterization and systematization of the Palaeolithic art of the Iberian Mediterranean, the lithic industries of the Middle Palaeolithic in the central Mediterranean region and the systematization of the sequence of the Upper Palaeolithic in this same region, with special attention to the palaeoeconomic and cultural issues. I have also contributed to a methodological renewal of the study of Levantine Art, with important contributions in relation to its evolution and the characterization of the style.

This work began with my incorporation to the University of Valencia in 1979, and has been carried out through the participation and, above all, the direction of various research projects of a national and regional nature, and some of an international nature. In this sense, I have been the PR of nine projects and have participated in another of the Sapanish National Plan, as well as in a Hispano-Belgian project and in another financed by the Leakey Foundation.

I have been director of various archaeological excavations, at sites such as the Cova Negra de Xàtiva, the Cova de les Cendres in Teulada-Moraira, the Cova de les Malladetes de Barx, the Ratlla del Bubo de Crevillent, the Cova de les Meravelles de Gandía , the Shelter of the Quebrada de Chelva, the Cave Antón de Mula, the Shelter of the Boja de Mula and the Shelter of the Doña Martina de Mula Estate, and the tracing and documentation works in the Shelters with paintings and engravings of the Cova de les Meravelles de Gandia, the Cova dels Cavalls (Tirig), Coves de la Saltadora (Coves de Vinromà), Abric de Vicent (Millares), the Cingle de la Mola Remigia (Ares del Maestre), Cova Remigia (Ares del Maestre), the Abric de la Sarga (Alcoi), the Abric de Centelles (Albocàsser) and Abric de la Xivana (Alfarb), as well as the collection of portable art of Parpalló.

My scientific production includes various monographs and about 250 articles or book chapters, both national and international.

I have been a guest speaker at various national and foreign congresses and a member of their scientific committees. I have been curator of various exhibitions related to my field of research, highlighting the one held at the University of Valencia in 2001, entitled “From Neanderthals to Cromañones. The beginnings of human settlement in the Valencian region ”.

To date, I have directed a total of 24 Doctoral Theses, as well as numerous Master's Thesis and Graduated's Thesis. I have collaborated as History Manager of the National Research Plan for the Ministry of Economy and Research and has participated in the Academy program, and as an evaluator for ANEP, ICREA and AGAUR, as well as for the Ministry of Culture of France and the UK Research Council and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

I direct the Prehistory Research Group of the University of Valencia (refer. UV 0423).
