Interuniversity Seminar "Drets Fonamentals i Fonaments del Sistema Penal" in memory of Prof. Tomás S. Vives Antón

Last March 21st took place in the Salón de Grados "Ascensión Chirivella" of the Faculty of Law of the University of Valencia the Interuniversity Seminar "Drets Fonamentals i Fonaments del Sistema Penal" in memory of Professor Tomás S. Vives Antón.

The Interuniversity Seminar organized by the Generalitat Valenciana, the Faculty of Law of the University of Valencia and Tirant Editorial aimed to commemorate the figure of Professor Tomas S. Vives, Vice President of the Constitutional Court between 2001 and 2004, Professor of Criminal Law and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Valencia and the University of Alicante. During his career he was awarded the Social Relevance Award of the Social Council of the Miguel Hernández University (2016) and the Distinction for the Defense of Constitutional Rights and Freedoms of the Generalitat Valenciana (2019), among others.

This event offered a wide variety of activities in a day that began at 9:30 am with the inauguration by the rector of the University of Valencia, Mavi Mestre; the councilor of Justice, Interior and Public Administration, Gabriela Bravo; the senior prosecutor of the Valencian Community, Teresa Gisbert; the dean of the Faculty of Law, Javier Palao; and the director of the ICCP, José L. González. Throughout the day, attendees had the opportunity to listen to four round tables covering different topics related to law.

First, from 10 to 11 am, the round table "Similarities" was held with the participation of the former Vice President of the Government and permanent advisor to the Council of State, Mª Teresa Fernández de la Vega; the Professor of Criminal Law at the UV and member of the CJCCV, Juan Carlos Carbonell Mateu; and the Emeritus Professor of Constitutional Law at the UC3M, Luis López Guerra, moderated by the former lawyer of the TC and the CGPJ Fernando Escribano Mora.

Between 11am and 12:15pm the topic was "Fundamental Rights" and was addressed by the TC lawyer, Ignacio Sanchez; the former judge of the Second Chamber of the SC, Luciano Varela; Professor of Procedural Law at UC3M, Victor Moreno and the Magistrate of the Provincial Court of Valencia, Salvador Camarena who were moderated by Professor of Constitutional Law and Director of IDHUV, Fernando Flores.

After a short break, the attendees enjoyed the round table on the Philosophy of Language by the Professor of Philosophy of Law of the UVEG and Senator, Javier de Lucas; the Emeritus Professor of Philosophy of the UVEG, Manuel Jiménez and the Professor of Criminal Law of the University of A Coruña, José Antonio Ramos, moderated by the Professor of Criminal Law of the UVEG, Javier Mira Benavent.

The last intervention dealt with the fundamentals of the Criminal System and was given by Professor Emeritus of Criminal Law at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Francisco Muñoz; Professor of Criminal Law at the Universidade da Coruña, Carlos Martínez-Buján; and Professor of Criminal Law at the Universidade Federal do Paraná i Fiscal, Paulo Cesar, moderated by Professor of Criminal Law at the UVEG, Cristina Guisasola.

The closing oversaw by the professor of Criminal Law of the UJI, María Luisa Cuerda and the professor of Criminal Law and director of the Department of Criminal Law of the UV, Vicenta Cervelló.
