
The professor of the Department of English and German Philology of the Universitat de València, Juan Vicente Martínez Luciano has died this Monday, April 25, at the age of 67. Martínez Luciano was a man of the theatre world, where he excelled in management and adaptations, especially of contemporary English plays.
Juan Vicente Martínez Luciano, former director of ‘Sagunt a Escena’, had just received the Carles Santos Prize for Performing Arts, awarded by the Universitat de València. As a theatre producer, he was in charge of Dramaturgia 2000. He was a founding member of the Spanish Academy of Performing Arts.
He was considered an excellent researcher and translator, as well as a great populariser of the most innovative English theatre. He founded and directed the collections "Teatro siglo XX" and "Teatro siglo XXI" at the Universitat de València. In 2010, he received the “María Martínez Sierra” award from the Asociación de Directores de Escena for the best theatrical translation of Tom Stoppard’s ‘The Coast of Utopia’.
