The Degree Hall of the Faculty of Geography and History will host this meeting on Thursday 1 December, which aims to highlight the potential of l’Horta to absorb CO₂ and mitigate the effect of climate change in the metropolitan area.
In April this year, the European Commission chose the city of València as one of the 100 cities aspiring to achieve climate neutrality by 2030. The main objective will be to achieve the absorption of 100% of the CO₂ emissions generated by its neighbourhoods. To this end, the València City Council, through the Innovation Centre ‘Las Naves’, has launched the València 2030 Missions project. Along the same lines, the city successfully applied to be named European Green Capital 2024.
In this context, L'Horta de València Chair: Metropolitan Territory and the centre ‘Las Naves’ are organising a conference on 1 December, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., in the Degree Hall of the Faculty of Geography and History of the Universitat de València (Avenida Blasco Ibáñez 28, first floor). This conference aims to emphasise the potential of l'Horta as a great carbon reservoir for the metropolitan area, but also as a regulating space for the more extreme climatic conditions that are the result of intensive urbanisation.
The conference is divided into three main blocks. The first, “L'Horta, metropolitan ecosystem”, will define the fundamental ecological aspects of this productive space closely linked to the city, but often unknown. The second block, “L'Horta as a space of resilience in the face of climate change", will deal with the capacity of the agricultural belt to mitigate the effect of climate change in the metropolitan area. As a closing activity, a round table will be held under the title “Preserving l'Horta to guarantee climate neutrality”, where some experiences will be presented to guarantee the ecosystemic functioning of periurban spaces such as l'Horta de València, most of which are related to the system of Payments for Environmental Services (PES).
