
In the ordinary session of the University Senate held last 26 February in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the University, the supportive actions and awareness-raising that the university is carrying out in relation to the war in Gaza were presented.
One of the most relevant topics of which the principal of the Universitat de València, Maria Vicenta Mestre, informed about to the University Senate in the ordinary session held last Wednesday, 26 February were the actions that confirm the agreement assumed by the University Senate and the Government Council to raise awareness in relation with the situation of serious violation of Human Rights that are taking place in the Gaza Strip.
In this sense, the principal recalled that the university has embraced different activities, such as the conference of the Professor Ilan Pappé, known for being a prestigious intellectual that is contributing to the recovery of the history of the Israel state, with the display of a counter-narrative, of scientific base. A complementary activity of the exhibition “HALT! Images that think”, of Artur Heras.
She also highlighted the cicle of conference “Europe facing its own destiny” an activity planned due to the 525 anniversary of the university, run by the Professors Joan Romero and Jose Luis Villacañas, and coordinated by the professor and delegate of the principal Maria Dolores Pitarch. The Dr. Sami Naïr also addressed the situation in Palestine and, afterwards, in the conference of the Professor Enzo Traverso, an stimulating debate in relation to the future of Palestine was maintained.
Lastly, the activity held last Thursday, 23 January was highlighted, in which the Paraninfo (Main Hall) of the Universitat de València embraced the presentation of the book "Palestine: inheriting the future”. In this ceremony we held the presentation of the work that revises the history of Palestine, and a cry of hope towards the future, with the news of ceasefire.
The Principal also brought to the University Senate the sum of the Government Council in the UV in the international rejection of President Trump’s idea in transforming Gaza in a luxury touristic area, displacing the Palestinian people, after the systematic genocide done by Israel, and the destruction of their houses, public services and productive structure.
To conclude, the principal brought to the attention of the University Senate the complaint put by the “Association for Action and Communication on the Middle East”, in which the court is informed about the decision of the Universitat de València not to sign any agreement wit universities and research centres in Israel. A decision with which, according to the accusers, the UV had infringed the constitutional and legal principal of no discrimination. A topic on which the Legal Guidance Service of the university will defend the institution with all the power of our principles and values, denying the accusation of discrimination, and reiterating our compromise in favour of peace, democracy, freedom and equality of the people.
