Online workshop, 21st June 2023, 9:30-17:00 (CET)
On Wednesday 21 June a high-level meeting will take place, organised by the European Commission under the title "The social value of arts and culture and their impact on well-being, mental health and inclusion for all". This is a meeting in which different heads of various Directorates-General present the conclusions and results of different projects dealing with the relationship between culture, health and well-being. The participating projects in the first part of the session are INVENT, UNCHARTED, MESOC and in the second part AMASS, ARTIS y TRACTION
The meeting is public and this is the link to attend to the meeting
The aim is to give an account of the latest research and results on the relationships between culture and well-being, in order for the European Commission to redefine its objectives and strategies in the immediate future.
To understand how much progress has been made in recent years on the relationship between culture and health and its translation into a new kind of policy at the intersection of the cultural and health and social dimensions, known as cultural well-being, it is instructive to start with the space devoted to it in the new Work Plan for culture 2023-26 recently published by the European Commission). The Roadmap envisages the launch of a new OMC (Open Method of Coordination) group devoted entirely to the inclusion of culture in health policies and the exchange of good practices, with a particular focus on mental health. It highlights, in particular, how cultural activities offer a holistic approach that produces health-promoting impacts on individuals of all ages and from all socio-economic backgrounds, improving quality of life and promoting both health and well-being at individual and community level.
It also highlights the significant potential economic impacts associated with treatment cost savings and the creation of new high value-added services. There is no doubt that this recognition is a decisive turning point, placing cultural well-being at the forefront of European policies for the coming decades. Such a result is not the result of fortuitous circumstances. The European Commission had already laid the groundwork for such a choice, first with the recognition of the culture-health crossover within the New European Agenda for Culture in 2018 , and then with the preparatory action in 2022 "Culture for health .At the same time, the publication of the WHO in 2019, exploratory review, which provided a critical overview of some of the studies and experiences developed in the international context over the years, signalled that the topic had now acquired full legitimacy within the most important international organisation dedicated to the promotion and protection of health.
The MESOC project will contribute, through the intervention of Pau Rausell and Francesco Molinari, with the results obtained in the project, which can be synthesised in the following document
