On Wednesday 2 of May, the session “100 years of the Chair in Valencian Language and Literature” will take place in the Enric Valor Hall of the Universitat de València. It is organised by the Department of Catalan Philology, the Language Policy Service and the Interuniversity Institute of Valencian Philology.

It is sponsored by the Centre of Valencian Culture. The Chair in Valencian Language was inaugurated on 27 January 1918 at the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature. It was managed by father Lluís Fullana, who taught from 1919-20 to 1928 within the language courses. “In this way, he pleased the aspirations of the Valencian people and their educated classes. They consider having an own language praised by illustrious writers to be one of their most precious treasures and legitimate prides.

According to the professor Emili Casanova, who is the director of the Department of Catalan Language, the session has three goals: “On the one hand, it aims to commemorate the start of education in Valencian at the University. On the other hand, it studies and disseminates the context and the meaning of this fact within the history of the language. Finally, it presents the Universitat de València as a home of all the Valencians who want to improve the use and knowledge of the language”.
