Even the most skilled forgers are able to imitate almost perfectly the appearance of the most original works of art. This is what the reports on forgeries which have been sold for high prices or have been exhibited in prestigious museums suggest. Even then, the stories about artistic forgeries often point out the fact that, even the most skilled forgeries, for some reason, never reach perfection (and what for a second looked convincing and consistent with the style of an artist, it stops being that in another one). The matter of how to be able to differentiate forgeries which have been created to look like originals poses really interesting questions regarding what should be considered as an evidence and experience. The talk will focus on how these questions are presented to the public opinion. From the autobiographies of forgers and experts, as well as research reports, exhibition catalogues and other sources – essentially those coming from European and North-American contexts of the 20th and 21st century – it will be dealt with the form in which the experts teach their publics in the possibilities as well as in the difficulties to know a work of art for what it is. Instructions worth to attend, not only for the several ways in which they stablish the ‘truth’ as something concrete, but also for how they determine the responsibility to disseminate it.

Biography:

Catelijne Coopmans is a researcher in the Department of Thematic Studies – Technology and Social Change (TEMAT) of the University of Linköping (Sweden). Her research have been focused on the aspects related to the evidence and visual demonstrations, as well as in the dynamics of comprehension and construction of expert knowledge in fields such as the medical diagnosis, visualization of commercial data and the authentication of art works. She is a doctor in Management Studies specialised in Studies of Science and Technology by the University of Oxford, among her most relevant publications we can find the volume ‘Representation in Scientific Practice Revisited’ (MIT Press, 2014) and the article ‘Eyeballing Expertise”, awarded by the American Sociological Association in 2016. Catelijne Coopmans is an editor of the ‘Social Studies of Science’ magazine and a member of the editorial council of the magazine ‘East Asia Science, Technology and Society’ (EASTS). After being almost ten years in the National University of Singapore, she has recently come back to Europe, moving to Girona and travelling regularly to Sweden with a partial work as a researcher and coach of academics.
